Can anybody give me a idea how old this shawl might be? The material feels like rayon.

    Hi,

It looks Chinese to me, not sure of the date as these have been made and imported and sold to the tourist industry for much of the past century. It does look post WWII, so it is not antique.

Hi, I don't think it is antique but I would want it to be at least vintage. I don't think I want to purchase shawls anymore, unless I know for certain of its age.

China...close up looks rayon-ish. No Chinese imports to the US from 1934 or so till the '70s.

It looks Chinese to me, too. I don't know how old it is - probably not as old as 1930's, but if it was, it could have belonged to someone who moved to the US from China (or Hong Kong,) or it could be from Hong Kong. There were exports from China up through, I believe, 1939 when China was conquered by Japan, and from Hong Kong right after WWII ended - from the mid-1940's on. (Just not during the occupation.) It is most likely from the 1950's, and if that's correct it is vintage.

A lot of people got out of China and moved to Hong Kong in 1949 when the Communists took over. Some of these people later emigrated to the U.S., Canada and to other countries.
