A friend in a photo group on Facebook has this photo of her grandfather or great grandfather and was wondering about the date. I am wondering what those round things are on the chair. (Never mind that gun!)
Making a completely data-free guess, I wonder if they could be shooting competition targets/souvenirs?
At first I thought they were laurel wreaths for the head. But the rings seem to be attached to some sort of banner, if I am seeing it correctly, so perhaps Maggie is right. Having them on the arms of an empty chair is very odd, as if someone should be sitting there. Just a guess on the date, looks around the year 1900. But that is a guess. It is a great photo.
