I am a little confused a civil war era 1860's Bustle dress??? How is that possible when the bustle didn't come into fashion until about 20 years later?

  15. Missy Hyatt, the crinoline of the 1850s developed from a circle to an oval during the 1860s and whilst the distinctive shape we generally associate with the bustle era fashions was yet to come, there is a distinctive bump to the back in the late 1860s.

From the VFG Fashion Timeline 1860-1870:
"The round hoop of 1860 evolved into an oval hoop by 1864. As the skirt developed, the back emphasis saw the creation of the first bustle, which had appeared by 1868. The big, soft, high and very draped bustle skirt enjoyed its popularity for 8 years."

When I think of Bustle fashion, the beautiful paintings of James Tissot come to mind - especially his work "Too Early" which was painted in 1873.

I just added the 2013 year to this one in the title, Maggie, definitely not as fresh as this weeks finds!

  19. Thanks Mary Jane: it can be confusing when old threads get new comments!
