Some of you may remember I got a bit silly about a gingham dirndl Jean Varon dress I have which I found in an advert in Vogue. As I'm sure with most of you, it's always a big deal when I find any piece I own documented in a contemporary source - and I had to share with people who would understand my excitement! I got this dress a little while back - Very funky, if a little....BIG! ;) Then lo and behold, flicking through a magazine from 1973 which arrived this morning Yes! My dress is photographed WITH John Bates himself! :bouncy: I also know that it cost £55 and was an exclusive fabric by Sally McLaughlan (never heard of her, but nice to know anyway!!) Yay!!! (I'm working my socks off with listings at the moment, so this was a welcome treat!) Liz
I luv when that happens. Like the ad.. I was going to bid on a dress simular, but then I thought it would be too much too wear. I like how it looks in the add all the ruffles in front. -Chris
Hurray! I think you deserve that - i've been noticing a lot of your listings lately (all tempting as ever) so you have indeed been working hard. What a nice thing to discover..and an amazing dress! What type of fabric is it?
Thanks everyone!!! I knew you'd all understand ;) Hatty, thank you! I decided recently that I needed to be more pro-active if I'm going to really make this work, I tend to cling onto things - eternally waiting for that 'right' moment to list them. I'm trying to hold myself to listing on Sundays and Wednesdays now - let's see how long it lasts!! ;) Incidentally, I was MADLY in love with that Cleopatra Varon you had - but it went waaaaay beyond what I could afford *sniffle* The fabric is 'Tricel surah', I have another dress from '73 in a totally insane print which features in another ad I have (the fabric that is, the dress is a different one) which I think is the same fabric. 1970s Varon dresses may look the epitome of Margot Leadbetter-chic nowadays, but I really respect him for pushing the envelope where new fabrics were concerned! Liz
This is good luck of the very best kind! I'm an old magazine junkie and whenever I get a "new" one the first thing I do is search it for familiar garments! I'm happy for you! Lizzie
congrats Liz!!!! At this rate you could open up the matching ad/dress exhibit. I would love to attend something like that Or at least put an exhibit on your website. Chris
I'd love to start a permanent British Boutique Movement exhibition some time! Maybe when I get my own dream boutique, I can have a little exhibition area! :D Liz
