    Hello,

I just came across a lovely 1960s women's suit and I would like to buy. It is a skirt and jacket ensemble. But, since I am over-analytical I will not touch it until I know more about the designer. The tag says it was made by a company "Tails of Mister Pants". Unfortunately, I'm not able to provide pictures of the suit. I would like to know who Mister Pants is! By the name I would say British mod?

I've searched high and low, but not much info.

  3. Welcome to the forums Ms. Lil. All I found was items for sale from the '60s and one from the mid '70s.

If you're able to post pics of the label (and preferably the garment too) it will help. As you can't post pics of the actual suit, perhaps seek a photo online of the same label if you know what it looks like?

I will post things as I find them, so the first thing I found was a 1961 US newspaper ad for:

"Pure wool tapered slacks, superbly tailored by the one and only "Mister Pants." Vibrant green, sizes 10-16....$16.99; Polished cotton blouse by "Tails of Mister pants" in a vibrant green print. Sizes 10-16...$9.99; Sash belt...$2.00"

From a 1970 (US) newspaper ad: "Designer Lynn Stuart of Mister Pants said her short skirts didn't sell for fall, but longer lengths sold well..."

From a 1970 article: "The major fashion boutique will be run by Lynn Stuart who is Mister Pants on Seventh Avenue. It will carry some of her own designs that are too original for her big commercial collection. Among them is a leather belt almost wide enough to double as a skirt."

From a 1961 newspaper article that reviewed the history of women's pants: "1951 and 1954--Two manufacturer's of men's pants, Jack Winter and George Stuart, just for the fun of it make pants for their wives--well-fitted, feminine, luxurious. Mrs. Winter and Mrs. Stuart are big hits in respective neighborhoods. Mr. Winter now operates four women's pants factories. Mrs and Mrs. Stuart, now known collectively as "Mister Pants," operate five."

I will end with snippets from this 1968 article about Lynn Stuart: "...Lynn Stuart, a millionaire...Lynn and her husband George run Mister Pants, the garment firm that vaulted out of nowhere a few years ago into a position of premier importance in the realm of fashion. They have seven factories, from Portland, Maine to Hialeah, Florida, subsidiaries like Pantsville, Mister Skirt, and Tails of Mister Pants...A vivacious and striking redhead, still under 40, Lynn has the face and figure of a model rather than a corporate boss...Lynn learned sewing at her mother's hand and then was a prize pupil at the Tobe-Coburn School of Design in New York. When she and her husband were married 18 years ago, they opened a small business manufacturing men's pants. One season they found themselves overstocked with blazer-striped fabric. They were scheduled to go to a party in Atlantic Beach, Long Island that weekend and Lynn Stuart had an intriguing thought. "Cut some of that fabric into man-tailored pants for me," she suggested to her husband. The pants were tapered, with fly front, and created a sensation at the party. The Stuarts promptly cut 10 more samples and took them on a sales trip to Miami. The first retailer who saw Lynn in the sample ordered 400 pair, and was on the phone a few days later, pleading for more. "We realized then that we had given birth to a 'pants revolution'," Lynn says. The 'revolution' spread rapidly across the country, impelling the Stuarts to close down their men's factory and plunge whole hog into the women's fashion market."

The Stuart's were cousins of mine that I met once when i was 10 years old. My father took me to their loft in manhattan to buy wholesale pants for my mother. They showed me a .mister pants magazine ad. The Stuart's seemed to have some fame. I remember them as attractive and lively

We cannot give info about estimated worth. Your best bet is to check online with other selling sites to make a comparison of pricing.

If you read all the above information on this same thread, you will get a pretty good idea of when these bell bottom pants were produced and info about the designer. They look 60s or early 70s to me.
