I have had a few vintage dresses that have an opening at the waist usually under some buttons > These dresses were clearly made this way. As in not a rip or tear? Any idea as to the purpose of this opening? The one I have now is a Lanz Original and does have a matching tie belt. DSCN5428.JPG
    Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Usually so you can put them on. You find them on dresses that only have centre from buttons: shirtwaisters. If the buttons only went to the waist, it doesn't give you a large enough opening so it goes below. You don't see the opening when worn and besides, she would have a slip underneath.
