Not sure what this is - a robe, dress?

I picked this up at an estate sale today and I'm not quite sure what it is! Could some one help me out please? What is it and what era do you think it is?

It's a velvet material and the belt is somewhat stitched on (one part needs to be restitched). There are a few hooks around the waist to help keep it closed. It actually looks much better in real life so I'm sorry the photos are not that great!

    Thanks :)

I would say that this a gorgeous velvet dressing gown or robe from the 1940s. The color is just beautiful!

  3. I would totally agree with Mary Jane! A beautiful 40s dressing gown and I love that purple velvet!

Thank you all :) I had a feeling it was a gown from the 40s. I initially bought it thinking it was a 1970s velvet dress so I was surprised (pleasantly) when I got it home and had a proper look at it!
