Dating an incredible dress

I’m having a heart attack. This dress. I just found it in a goodwill for 6.99 and this is after I vowed to boycott that rotten establishment. (Long story) Anyway I swear this dress called me from the parking lot. lol

All it’s seams are raw and tiny. It’s bias cut. The belt is incredible. There is some kind of weird tag inside it. It goes over the head and buttons at the back of the neck with two hook and eyes on the collar. It snaps at the wrists. It has batwing sleeves. Nothing inside the shoulders. May I have finally scored a dress from the 30s? As you can see, my cat loves it too. lol

  2. Wow, you've really scored. Agree with '30s, early '30s I think and spectacular. Go you!

Yes, I'd say 1930s, as well. Is the tag paper? Looks like a dry-cleaning tag.

Thank you! I still can’t believe it. It’s in mint condition!

As for the tag, it’s some kind of stiff fabric with a number on it, and it’s clipped to the dress with what looks like a heavy duty clip of some kind that makes me think it was meant to be more permanent than a dry cleaning tag, but who knows!

Beautiful! I concur it is from the 1930s. Love the cut steel grommets on the cuffs and great belt buckle. What a great find! Congrats. :)

Are the shoulders padded? And is it a textured weave? I wonder if it might have been a wedding dress that was dyed black and rhinestone studs added... It's a great dress, but there is something about it that looks just a bit unusual...

No the shoulders aren’t padded. I don’t think it was dyed. The entire thing seems “unmessed with” to me. What I Did think was unusual about it is the fabric. The entire dress is made out of the same fabric, but the bodice and sleeves are reversed. I actually wondered if it wasn’t lined somehow. The fabric seems like chiffon on one side but shiny on the other side. I have no idea what the fabric is.

My cat loves full skirted swishy dresses. She makes me nervous. lol She’s a sweetheart though. We rescued her off the street over the summer. She was so skinny and covered in sores. She’s microchipped and we searched for her owner but they didn’t want her anymore. It was a really awful way to get rid of her! We named her Jenny Linsky after one of my youngest’s favorite children’s book. :)

Is the fabric rayon satin-backed-crepe? Reversing the fabric for different parts of the dress for dramatic effect and contrast was sometimes done in the 3o's.

Bless you. We got both our cats in similar ways, hungry off the street, either lost or abandoned.

We were feeding the feral mother, when they all ran in one very cold November day. Our two were about two months old at the time, one kitten did not remain ran back out and the mother went back out as well.
