Two auctions on eBay: Late 1930s/early 1940s silk devoré velvet cheongsam, made in China by the Sincere department store. Cap with fake queue, Chinese, late Qing dynasty Cap with false hairpiece hanging attached, in imitation of the queue hairstyle (front section of head was shaved and section at the top was worn long, often braided) required of men under the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912) in China. From 1890s on, men were cutting off their queues as an act of rebellion against imperial rule. During the late Qing period, men without queues would wear such a cap. In addition, western missionaries to China often adopted local dress and wore a cap with a fake queue. This cap is from the collection of an American medical missionary for the Episcopal Church who arrived in China in 1911.
