Hi all We found this beautiful bodice in a box that we won at an auction for less than $20 and would love anyones opinions or expertise about it. It (and a few other items that I will post on here in the next few days) was listed as 'costume clothes' but the more we look at it, the more we think it might actually be from the actual era (of which we are unsure). Thanks!
It is indeed authentic, antique, late Victorian era, looks circa 1880s. . What a fabulous thing to find at an auction. The lace is gorgeous.
Can you please show us clear detailed photos of the interior? It's hard to see if it's authentic or a period costume. It's similar to theatrical costumes I've made from this time and looks a bit clean to be antique (if you know what I mean). I've tried enlarging them but need more detail - especially it would be good to see how the boning is, seams are sewn and finished off and where the shoulder seams sit. I would expect them to be towards the back if authentic but they look closer to the top, suggesting a reproduction costume.
Thanks for the extra pics Tamzzyn, I need something closer and clearer though so I can see the type of stitches. If you can, a good clear close up of the centre back and waist of the bodice where you can see how the bones are attached and the seams finished, would be handy.
