Date for a little, black Suzy Perette

Discussion in 'PUBLIC Vintage Fashion - Ask Questions Get Answers' started by shopping-goddess, Jun 30, 2004.

  1. Hey, all.

    It's only my second Perette find and I'm unsure of dating on it, so I've lazily called it late-50s-to-early-60s. I know some of you have had more 'Suzies.' Ahem, Sue...

    <img src="http://www.otherworldlystuff.com/suzype14.jpg">

    The skirt has wide pleats at the hips and a decorative, wrap-closure at the front. The sleeves are really unusual, in a sort of bell cut that is stitched, at the front, to the front bodice, so that there's a pleat formed between the sleeve and the bodice. Does that make sense?

    <img src="http://www.otherworldlystuff.com/suzype15.jpg">

    The sleeves and the nylon zipper steered me toward 60s, but I don't know. The skirt is rather long. What do you think?

    Thanks for any help,

    Steph

    Steph, would those be 'flutter' sleeves?

    I would say this is early 60s, or a cusper, but the nylon zipper doesn't seem right, as I have a couple of early 60 Suzys that have the metal
    zip still. Does it look like the zipper has been replaced?

    Do you have a pic of the label?

  3. Thanks, ma'am. The only other Perette I've had was definitely 60s and had a metal zipper, too. I've looked closely at the zipper on this one and if someone replaced the zipper, they took apart the entire dress to do it (hee hee), because parts of the rest of the interior construction overlap the zipper's interior edges and have continuous stitching. I hope that makes sense. Oops on the label! Here it is...

    Steph, I honestly do not know. That label was used in the early 60s, as was another label with a more modern looking gal without an umbrella.
    This label was more common in the mid to later 50s. Nylon zips were used in the late 50s, but I have never seen a Suzy with a nylon zip unless
    it was later. Same with Gigi Young.

    That boat collar to me looks like early 60s also.

    Hopefully someone will know for sure for you. Sorry, I'm not more help.

    Sue
