Fur shrug ?s Could it be ermine?

Discussion in 'PUBLIC Vintage Fashion - Ask Questions Get Answers' started by themerchantsofvintage, Dec 9, 2006.

  1. Okay, it's not mink or muskrat... is as soft as beaver, but doesn't look like beaver; so what am I lookin' at here? And is this 50s? Included a pic of lining in case that helps.

    Mucho THANKS!

It doesn't match anything in the Fur Resource?

I would have thought muskrat, as I have a beat-up jacket of the some fur.

Mine is going to The Humane Society, once I rip out the lining.

    hmmmmm......

Deborah, that is simply gorgeous! I am not a fur maven, by any stretch of the imagination, but based on my limited knowledge, I wouild've said muskrat straight off..... Could it be river otter, which is extremely soft? I've only ever seen sheared otter, so I don't know what it would look like "au natural."

  4. Thanks, Jamie! This is much softer than muskrat. It's the stripes that have me thrown - without the stripes I probably would say beaver just because of the softness. I've not found anything similar on the VFG fur resourse or others.

  6. Thanks, Anne! Perhaps it could be river otter, I'll go and check and see if they have stripes.

  7. Oh so utterly selfish bump...

Ermine is as soft as a house cat. They are small critters, so there will be ridges where the hides are sewn together, usually with a noticeable tip for the nose area.
Here's an ermine I've had in the past, note the ridges in the pelt:

I don't think yours is ermine.

  9. Thanks so much for checking this for me Jenn and posting a pic of yours. This critter is definately as soft as a house cat but the pelts are bigger. A mystery fur.

Glad I could help....there's lots of critters that are pelt-able and soft, ermine are the size of a ferret or well fed city rat, so it takes a lot of critter

That does kinda look like a rat pelt convention.

But, very soft, of course. :D

Thanks, Sara! I may just wait til the New Year and bring it to a furrier or I'll put "possibly" muskrat. Perhaps, I'm having a mental block (not unusual...), but it's unlike other muskrats I've sold.

I'd say mink dyed marmot on this. Pretty!
