I was working on a listing for a dress with the maker's label "Rite-fit half-size dresses." I believe mine is late 30's and I did find a 1936 ad for this line, expounding on the fact that adjustments would not be necessary.

    In a later ad from 1949 a store announced - "
“To Rite-Fit's five million fans, Rite-fit needs no introduction. But if you have never worn a half-size before, come in tomorrow and try on a rite-fit fashion. They’re specially designed for you who are 5’5 1/2 or under; styled to cater to your figure proportions and eliminate costly alteration problems! They’ve a flair for fit and flattery, yet they cost so little.

And then they give a size comparison.

    14 1/2 = 16

    16 1/2 = 18
