I picked this up in an antique store because I liked the feminine shape of it. There’s pinking along the pockets but nowhere else, and no sign of a label. Might it be handmade? Any ideas on how old? I’m assuming something had to be worn under it for modesty, though it may look a bit more indecent than it would on the right size person because it’s too small for my dress form. The knit is very rough. Thank you for your help!
A few more pics showing the construction. I was mistaken. All the edges are pinked and serged. It has little straps with snaps to hang it up. Some of the seams are basted to the dress. The last pic with that ribbon is showing the waist seam.
I think it’s that ruffle. The whole thing has a late 60s to 70s vibe to me, but that ruffle reminds me of a sweater I had about 10 years ago. I’ve seen that one snap/wrap over arrangement on a 50s dress. I don’t know what to make of this.
I tried it on to get a more accurate fit. Let me tell you, this is not a comfortable dress. It’s maddeningly itchy. I did manage to show how it’s a bit more modest than on my dress form, but I do think it’s a little too snug on me too. I think it was homemade.
I'm getting a 70's vibe from it. I've had some early 70's polyester maxi dresses with similar ruffle shaped necklines, and the tie waist and brown colorway just remind me of several 70's sweaters I've had over the years. It's definitely handmade. I think the pockets are the only thing pinked because pinked knit will still unravel, which is why the seamstress went over all the edges in a zig-zag stitch.
