    Good morning/afternoon/night,

Picked this lovely wool dress from a thrift shop yesterday, and it has got me puzzled. The tag seems to be very old, but I still can't date it. Any help is welcome.

Sorry about the improvised pictures, by the way. :hysterical:

Thanks for your time and willingness.

  2. Hello, can you take a photo of the label with the underlabel flipped down, please? Does it have a brand name? Are there any other labels down the side seams?

It only has 'Dralon' written on the tag and there's only the size label down the seams.

Edit: I've researched it a little bit and found out it was made by Brazilian brand 'Dralon Knitwear', or in Portuguese, 'Dralon Malhas'. I ended up finding some ads from the 1960s. In one of the magazines, there's a stamp that dates back to June 21st, 1966.

    1960s ads (I'm guessing some of them are): D_Q_NP_14709-MLB171012369_309-Q.jpg IMAG0006_thumb%255B1%255D.jpg publicidadeantiga_santanostalgia_dra[2].jpg publicidadeantiga_santanostalgia_dra[1].jpg dralon_sn_18072016_1.jpg pullover_dralon.jpg

    1966 magazine with stamp: propaganda-antiga-malhas-dralon-bayer-20-x-27-cm-jun1966-D_NQ_NP_712269-MLB27570918458_062018-F.jpg propaganda-antiga-malhas-dralon-bayer-20-x-27-cm-jun1966-D_NQ_NP_895676-MLB27570967122_062018-F.jpg

If you Google "The History of Dralon" you will find that it's an acrylic fiber developed in 1954 and is still in use. The ads you showed look 1960's. I think your dress looks early 1970s based on the turtleneck and the color. I don't know if care labels were universal but they were required in the USA in the early 1970's. My only other question about dating it to the 1970s is if Size 44 would have been a size that you would have found in Brazil then.

The ad with the dating also has a turtle neck and stripe (though to the sleeve and not to the body), i'm tempted to think yours is late 60s-early 70s. However I am not an expert and many trade members here have crazy amounts of experience so i'm sure they will chime in.

After quite some searching for Brazil's care label laws, I ended up with... Nothing conclusive, I guess. I'm gonna have to ask grandma :hysterical: (she's 82 and used to make her own clothes since she was nine up until the 70s if I'm not mistaken).
But here's what I found, anyway:
Norm NM-ISO 3758:2013 says that symbols must be used to indicate how the product must be preserved. It's from 2013.
In the same INMETRO document, I found the link to another PDF that says that the article is based on a law from 1973, but the 1973 law doesn't say anything about labels or garment care.

Edit: I just asked grandma, and she says she was a size 42, and that 44 was a size you could find back then in Brazil.

One observation: My thought is that Dralon didn't have to put any care instructions in their garments but did put them anyway because it was a new and delicate material. After further research, I concluded that the 1973 law is about putting symbols AND instructions in the label, and this dress has a tag with instructions but no symbols.
