Just looking for a date on this dress and if possible, what this fabric is. It was reminds me of sheer curtains only it’s much stiffer. It comes with some very “little bo peep” style accessories too. There is a satiny under dress and then the gauzy overdress. Both have side metal zippers. The fingerless gloves are secured with hook and eyes. Thanks for your help.

  2. How charming. Organza and late 30s possibly. Look forward to what others have to say. Again, so lovely.

Assuming there are no tags, I think that this is a 1950s bridesmaid's dress that was home sewn or dressmaker made. It could also have been made for a summer garden party but I think it's a bridesmaid's dress. The slip and the gloves looks like they might be rayon or silk taffeta and the overdress looks like organdy or organza. If there is any place you can snip a thread you could do a burn test. It could be all silk. The organza may have been stiffened or has gotten stiffer with age.

I will be interested in what others have to say, too. The lines of the dress look more '50's to me than '30s - although the separate slip seems '30s. The side zipper doesn't look '30s to me. I have a sheer early '50s dress that must have had a matching under slip. Could you show us the zipper pull and any seams? I have been trying to find out if fingerless gloves were worn in the '50s for weddings.

I agree it's a lovely dress. You find the best pieces!

  4. Yes, a late 1940s 1950s brides maids dress. I have had a few with the gloves and hats. And yellow was almost always the color

I thought it might be 50s because of that collar, for some reason. And the wide pinked seams. I suspected 30s because of the way the dresses snap together at the shoulders. I have a 30s organza dress and it’s much more fragile than this yellow dress, for what that’s worth.

Anyway, here are some pics of the details. The hooks on the gloves, hems, seams and the zipper, which is the same on both. It has a Crown zipper pull.

Late 1940s, 1950s. Those matching mitts and crownless hat are certainly bridal party.
