Can anyone tell me what kind of work this is, and if it was machine or hand made? It is part of a larger piece composed of 12 squares.

I believe that's handmade Maltese lace, a bobbin lace made on a pillow. The four crosses, even though not strictly speaking Maltese crosses, are one clue, but everything else also fits including those log-like rounded pieces and the overall composition.
