Hi I’m not sure how to do this I just joined. I have a vintage fur coat the man I bought it from told me it was his grandmas in storage for a while and she bought it in the 60s from Russia and claims it’s mink but I’m not certain if it is or if it’s muskrat. I removed the stitching from the bottom of the lining to attempt identification of the pelt. Could you please help me? Thank you.
Hello, His grandma may have thought it was mink because when she purchased it she was told it was muskrat mink or some other misnomer that had the word mink in it however it is indeed muskrat dyed to look like mink and I would date it a bit earlier to the 50s.
Ok that’s disappointing:(. Thank you very much for helping me out. Also have you ever seen that label/stamp.
You're welcome and we're happy to help anytime. I have not seen that stamp and I may or may not be able to find more information about it. Do the larger letters say Fur Overs and can you tell what the smaller characters are?
I didn’t find anything about that stamp sadly. It would have been neat to though. It wouldn’t increase the value but sometimes those stamps indicate what the misnomer is. About 6 years ago someone had asked about a fur and it had a stamp on it which did state the misnomer. Have a look. https://forums.vintagefashionguild....t-voziou-brothers-new-york.48169/#post-478062
Awesome. Glad you were able to find it. I love the older muskrat coats for the very reason that they are sort of mysterious in the way that even if you find out they are really muskrat you don’t know the actual misnomer that was given to them unless you find that fictitious name somewhere.
