I posted this on the VC&A but I thought I post here as well (and in case you wanted the label for the resource!)

This name is on most scarves I seem to find but I've never seen it on a dress. The best I could come up with online was that Victor Stiebel used to design for them and that they made gowns for Vivien Leigh and Diana Dors. Does this bode well for my stunningly simple lace dress?? I SWEAR I will be reshooting it in the morning with some semblance of natural light so I don't know if you can see the details. I've added the swirly brooch for impact, and was thinking of giving it away free with the dress. Has anyone found that a freebie helps sales?

Thanks!!!!

That's gorgeous! WoW!

About freebies, I have never "advertised" a freebie in an auction so couldn't tell you. I think though that the brooch helps get people's minds working about the dress..."owning it" i.e. thinking about other things that might go with it and already have something (the brooch) that might pull their look together. the brooch placement definitely is inline with the brooch trends in the mags.

Well, actually, I have had sets where the jacket is unbelievably cute but the pants, or the other piece just takes away from it, or makes it look dated or a "bit too much" vs vintage...and some people don't automatically think "i can wear that cute jacket by itself...or the pants with something else"....so i throw in the extra piece as a bonus...and might not necessarily show it but mention it....

Jaw still needs to be picked up off my desk because it fell when i saw that dress....hee hee...

the more i remember though, the freebies more or less created a better feeling with the buyer and they were more likely to buy again. I have never asked if they bought because of it..

LOL, thanks for that! I was wondering whether it was going to be just me who really liked it. Sometimes things are just SO simple and timeless, that you wonder if people will just yawn!! ;)

I picked up the brooch the other day, thinking of selling it individually.....but there are a few minor marks on it which was why I thought of including it as an added bonus for the buyer.

what is the bottom of the dress like...long full skirt?

Yes, if there are a few small marks but still on good shape it would be good as a freebie though the shape might sell it seperately...shown with brooch available in another of my auctions...

i ahve had great luck "accessorizing" and selling seperate just in case someone loves the handbag/scarf and the dress doesn't fit them.
And if the accessory doesn't sell, throw it in as a bonus.

that's another way to approach if you were contemplating seperate.

but either way, the brooch does add some color and draw the eye to someone scanning for black dresses... even if they had no attention of wearing it with it....it would catch their eye...

i am sure someone else will have more insight...

esp on the actual dress!

I sold a Jacqmar dress in the Spring that I'm pretty sure was early 60,
the label was a bit different than this one (your's looks earlier). I do remember the dress was wonderfully finished off inside - a lot of hand
stitching. I'll see if I can find a pic.

I'm wondering if Jacqmar's had several designers that worked for them.

the first paragraph of the article mentions sewing trim on a
gown for Vivien Leigh

and

this is a Morton Digby for Jacqmar 40s suit

not a much to be found about the company though (other than scarves)

Nothing to add apart from that I love this (and the brooch too - I think people occasionally like avoiding the accessorizing 'challenge'...)

Thanks Sue and Ms Boudoir!! :)

I certainly wasn't expecting so much information on the label from Scott - very chuffed about that! Very glad I didn't leave it behind now ;)

Sometimes you find these things in the most unlikely places, don't you?
