Men\'s Camel Hair Coat needs a date

I wrote this up as early 60's but just want to make sure. And I really can't figure out the labels one says Made in Canada and the Camel hair label says made in England Does that mean they just made the fabric in England? But the other label says fabrique au Canada

The coat is made in Canada with fabric made in England. I'm not getting early '60s from this, not positive but maybe more late '70s - 80s. Early '60s would be much more fitted with narrower lapels.

And just so that you know, the bottom button on a men's jacket is never buttoned... ;)

Thanks Kevin but why is the bottom button never buttoned. For sitting purposes?? or style??

THe story is that Edward VII was too fat to button the bottom button of his swallow tail coat, so others at court did the same, and it trickled down from there. I am not sure whether this is a true story or not, as you see fashion illustrations of men with all their buttons done up throughout the 1920s and 1930s. However, generally speaking by 1950 it is universal to not do up the button at the bottom of the jacket. I know from experience that if you want to put your hands in your pants pocket the bottom button being undone on the jacket helps for access, and a lot of fashion illustrations in the 1940s - 1970s show men with at least one hand in their pant's pocket.

  5. Wow I didn't know that either, about the bottom button, kewl.

Nice Jacket Pauline, I sold a camel hair coat last year and it did pretty good.

Thanks for the background Jonathan. I didn't know that was the reason. Actually, I didn't know there was a reason, I just knew. :)
