Need Help From You 80s People On What to Call This Leotard Skirt Pants Thingy!!

Discussion in 'PUBLIC Vintage Fashion - Ask Questions Get Answers' started by vintageclothes-line, Aug 5, 2004.

  1. Come on you guys. Maybe some of you who have been lurking but not posting can help me. I need your help. I think it is late 80s but don't have any idea what to call it. Stretchy knit material, all one piece, shoulder pads, back zipper. Are they pettipants??

    And keywords..Madonna, Emo, Punk, Hipster, Japan, New Wave, Baby Doll??:( . . . I get so confused!<br><br><img src=http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/magnolia3/blkstripedleggings7.jpg><img src=http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/magnolia3/blkstripedleggings.jpg><br><br><img src=http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/magnolia3/blkstripedleggings2a.jpg><br><br><img src=http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/magnolia3/blkstripedleggings3.jpg><br><br> <img src=http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/magnolia3/blkstripedleggings8.jpg><br><br>This is a cartoon and black and white effect.<br><br> <img src=http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/magnolia3/blkstripedleggingsa.jpg><img src=http://image.inkfrog.com/pix/magnolia3/blkstripedleggingsb.jpg><br><br>TIA.

Hmm... The shorts (I'd just call them lace-trimmed bicycle shorts) are very Madonna circa 1985 or so - but she wouldn't have been caught dead wearing a matching <i>outfit</i> like this, so my guess is that the ensemble is the mall-ified version of her her look then.

As for keywords, what's allowed by ebay is what confuses me (I know I have a lot of good company) but if you can use Madonna - that was my first thought. New Wave too, although that's stretching it a bit.

I'll be interested to see what others have to say. Strangely - or maybe not - I have yet to buy one piece of So 80's clothing to sell - can't exactly say that I don't get it because there's so much photographic evidence showing that I got it (or had it) all right :) My own take on it was more punk-ified than this outfit, but I'll tell you - I look at photos from that time & see I was a LOT more influenced by Madonna than I thought I was!

My first thought was a very gentrified Madonna, and definitely mid
    80s.

As to what to call it? I wouldn't go with gothic, punk or emo....Japan or
    Anime may work.

Gonna go do a google search and see if there is anything I can find.

  4. I don't know what to call it, either, though "New Wave" also came to mind. It looks a lot like a Victorian-to-Edwardian swimsuit, too.

I still have a pair of 80s, bloomer-style, long white shorts with white lace trim in my drawer. Hey, don't snicker; they're cute! :)

  5. Hey, wait a minute, who are we 80s people? :o

Ooo, ooo, I agree with Sue! This looks so much like what anime characters wear. I think "cosplay" would be very beneficial, here.

  6. We just rented 13 Going On 30. You should have seen the hair and outfits!!

    Cosplay...hmmmm.

    Linda,

keywords that seem to do the best in 80s for this type of fashion are
    Japan, Indie, Madonna.

    Sue

  8. Thanks, Sue. Just spent the last 30 minutes trying to figure out what indie was. Independent??

I see Indie frequently, too, and have never asked.....Does anyone know what it really stands for?

Steph...I think it looks like a vintage bathing suit, too....At least I wasn't the only one ;)

  10. Well, I guess I could always promote it as a costume!!

Seems like I remember these being worn with high heels and socks. Anybody else remember?

Wow it does look like a bathing costume! I picked up an 80s "Matsuda" (whatever happened to him?) promotional catalogue at a thrift and it had some very similar things that were swim suits for men. Without the overskirt of course.

Rolled-down socks with a little lace edging and black patent stillettos? Oh yes I remember those! Once in the 80s I was in a town near Boston called Revere, at the beach, and I saw a girl with a one-piece bathing suit, PANTY HOSE and white patent stillettos. At the beach! Of course her hair was a mile high and teased and crimped. You could smell the mixture of salt, sea, cheap perfume and hairspray! I was decidedly punk then, so that sight made me and my friends laugh for days!

Kevin, this is NOT a good mental image for early morning! :D

  13. Been trying to research the 80s. Found short ruffle skirts with leggings, spandex popular but can't find a picture!!

Seems like Madonna wore something like this in an early movie. Something like a wedding reception on the lawn of this huge home and she showed up wearing this wild outfit. Did she fall into the cake? Does anybody remember this?

By the way, looks like that 80s puffy vest, etc., neon striped skiwear is quite popular now, too.

Well, back to being lost in the 80s. What a feelin... :P

If Madonna is KWS, I would use "Material Girl"

Was the movie <i>Desperately Seeking Susan</i>?

  16. Kevin, I have not had time to do any research on that movie but it does sound familiar.

    Thanks!

THAT'S the movie. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I missed the whole 80s fashion scene because I was hiding in a cabin in deep east texas painting. I was still wearing hippie clothes. When I came out of hiding, the 90's had dawned.
I can truthfully say, I've never seen anything like that outfit LOL. I was terribly fashion backwards in the 80s.

  19. Gosh Joey, I can envision you like Rip Van Winkle, just waking up after a long sleep. Can just see you emerging from the cabin with long hair to your feet, rubbing your eyes and wondering what happened!!!

    Crazy, aren't I? :P

LOL! Is that how you got started with vintage, Joey? You missed the '80s but where steppin' out just in time for the '70s revival. All your clothes were suddenly hip again!

    :D kj
