I have this dress that looks like a 1940s dress with the snaps and hooks closure, there is support at the waist area ( Girdles/ corset? ). however, there is plastic support in the neck area, I have a hard time dating it, could anyone help? Also, do you know what kind of dress it is? Thank you! Oh, and there are armpit sweat pads in this dress!

I'll start by saying that I believe the opening would be at the back.

Absolutely! I think 191o- 1912ish. The 'plastic' would be celluloid collar stays to keep the high lace collar standing up. I also see an interior waist band and boning. A good press would do wonders for this dress!

Does that means the girdle/corset thing is supporting the belly not the back?

Oh yes- it closes at the back.
What I am seeing is the interior construction of the dress, which is not for support, but for shaping and to make it lay smoothly over a separate corset.
The order of underwear from the skin out would be along these lines:
1)camisole and bloomers ( separate or joined at waist) OR chemise
    2) corset
    3) corset cover and petticoat OR princess line petticoat.

I am seeing this as some sort of under dress, not a dress itself.

  9. It looks like it is missing a piece.
But I agree early 1912 era as stated above.

Hollis, what would the material be for the stays?

I have seen whalebone ( probably too early for this dress) , flat steel, or spiral steel
