I saw the US Antiques Road Show tonight. A gentleman brought in a paper Campbell's soup dress that was a store promotion that his wife had purchased in 1967. Occassionally a piece of clothing shows up on the show, but it is usually antique clothing, nothing vintage in general unless it is a uniform of some sort.

It will probably be on again (and again and again and again) if you check your local listings.

The funny thing is that they just had it in the basement and were motivated to look for it because they previously saw a paper dress on the show while watching it. It was said that there was one paper dress out there that was worth thousands and these people happened to have one, and there it was in their basement preserved perfectly except for some wrinkles. They decided to frame it and hang it in their house.

  2. Yea, the Andy Warhol Campbell Soup ones are quite valuable. I have 3 or 4 run of the mill paper dresses. They are cute but certainly not worth thousands, sigh::)(

This wasn't by Andy Warhol per se. Campbells was inspired to haev em whipped up make them a few years after the famous paintings and gave them away at grocery stores to cash in on it., so they decided to jump on a trend. So life imitating art imitating life imitating art....... The lady bought it to wear for halloween.

My still favorite is "The Flushing Bride" the dress made out of toilet paper.

If I remember correctly, I think Jonathan was collecting paper dresses at one point - I can't see him hanging his on the wall if it is worth so much! :duh:

Yes, I do collect them... The Campbell's souper dress was promoted in 1967 through a coupon system found in magazines and campbell soup labels. When you redeemed the coupons and sent in a some small amount of money to cover postage, you got sent the dress. They have sold as high as 7,000 U.S. at auction, but they are regularily sold on eBay for anywhere between $300 and $800. The design is ripping off Warhols Campbell soup art that he did in the early 60s, which he ripped off from the original Campbell's soup label, proving that graphic art was fine art, in Warhol's interpretation.
