Ribboned dress - I'm puzzled - ?'s

  1. Ribboned dress - I\'m puzzled - ?\'s

I may not even list this as I really have trouble photographing shiny stuff (no reflector yet) AND I don't have a bigger mannequin.

    But I am very curious.

I believe this was ribboned after the pattern was cut. Could that be? The neckline and arm holes are all finished in the same zigzag pattern (not the hem and you would think it would have been). The front pattern of stylized paislies at the top cannot be found anywhere else and the paislies at the back are bookmatched. As you can see on the inside the ribbon work has not been cut in to. I hope I'm making sense.

There are no labels anywhere. It is fully lined and well-made.

And date - are we 90s????

    As always, many thanks!

Would stump me too - looks sparkly clean! What closures does it have?

  3. Just a nylon "Lightning" zipper up the back - nicely hidden. It has probably faded, the ribboning is more of an off white and is attached to a fine mesh white material that has remained white.

    Very Pretty Deborah!

I wonder if it might be 80's?

You have nice clear shots (I actually like how you have shown it not clipped, it lets the true shape show).

I think Vintage White Ribbon Cocktail Dress along with the size, or something along those lines, will hopefully bring in the hits for you.

I would think this would be exactly the type of dress some ladies would be looking for....
It highlights those summer tans.... :)
Perfect for cocktails or dressier summer functions (weddings, etc.)

  7. Thanks so much, Lynn! I clipped the others because it's not very becoming on the size 3/4 manny - it floats on her. And thanks for the title input - I did not think of cocktail - good choice.

I would agree on a 90's date with this one.

Could it possibly be mid-late 1960s? The style could be from the then. Lightning zippers are Canadian, so the dress was retailed in Canada although the workmanship might have been done elsewhere. Dresses were often shipped without findings and added later, especially in the 1950s and 1960s as it was a way of avoiding some duty on imports. I am not sure when Lightning went out of business but I think it was the early 1990s. I will see if I can find out because I live near where the factory was and I know there is an exhibition of their history at the local museum, which I haven't gone to in 7 years!

  10. Jonathan, that's so kind of you! THANK YOU! Certainly, I would be THRILLED if it was 60s!!! Would they have massed produced dresses where the ribbon work is put on after cutting the pattern? That's what I find so unusual about this dress. I will take a picture of the zipper and post.

I live near the old Cortecelli stocking manufacturing plant - now condos (what isn't these days). I should hop down to McCord and see if they have anything on them.

    ...and again, thanks!

  11. Here's the pic, Jonathan. Sorry I couldn't get the "Lightning" to show, but it is there.

Looks a little older to me - I am going to wait for Jonathan but I think you can definitely put 'timeless' in your description Deborah, after this discussion!

  13. LOL - I think you're right!!!

I really like this dress! Have you sold it yet?

Deborah, I think this is late 60s. I had a Cezanne
late 60s silk shantung dress that had very similar
    ribbon embroidery.

"Timeless" is a great descriptive word and it is a wonderful dress! According to the fashion mags, white is hot right now.
Do you have a scan you can include with your auction?

  16. Sue, how thoughful of you to look at this!! No I do not have a scan to include - and, just to be sure, by that you mean a photo a Cezanne??

    Thanks!!!

I'm a bad person.... I completely forgot to look into this for you. Geez, I go to NY all the time to see the museums but haven't been to the local museum with the display on lightning zippers in 7 years!

However, looking at this again, I really do think its 1960s. The high cut armholes, scoop neck etc. I would bet its mid 60s.

I can't get to the museum this weekend but perhaps in the next week... I am so sorry... the road to hell is paved with good intentions!

  18. I see we travel the same road - LOL. Not to worry, Jonathan! I think I'll go with "Timeless" and, now that we have two votes for 60s, I feel much more confident.

Louise, I'm sorry I missed your note before. I may have this listed by Sunday. I will let you know.

    Hi Deborah,

No, I meant a scan of a pic of white dresses that have been featured in the current fashion mags. It isn't necessary by any means,
sometimes just adds that little bit of *oomph* and interest to
a listing to show what is deemed as being at-the-moment-hot.

    :)
