The Oscars cannot be mentioned without mentioning the very first film to win an academy award for best picture.:love008:

In 1928 it was the 1927silent film, Wings, starring Clara Bow. Many believe it was the Jazz Singer that was the only silent film to win an Oscar. Jazz Singer won technical awards, but it was Wings that won best picture that year.

    The very very simplified synopsis
Two young men fall in love for the same same girl. After US enters WWi, both join the Air Corps and become ace. They remain friends, but the realtion to the girl threatens their friendship. synopsis compliments of imdb.com

This film received the honor in 1997 to be selected by the National Film Preservation Board as a national treasure for future preservation. Allegedly, it is on laserdisc but I have no info on any other medium.

Usually I like watching to see the gowns - tonight I think I'm more curious to see what Chris Rock comes out with!

Heard there is a couple minute delay on the broadcast, just in case.

Yes, I am very curious. Not for nothing, but I think he is a very unusual choice. In fact, I heard some of the academy members were not happy due to his predisposition to using course language. I had first head that it would be Billy Crystal or Steve Martin. It should be interesting, esp the show is more suited to someone who can also at times take a back seat out of the spotlight and play the MC.

At 8:00 pm, they will run live from the red carpet on ABC, 30 minutes prior to the awards show. I think there might be more coverage on other channels prior.

Star Jones is hosting "E's" Red Carpet this year. I am getting really tired of having to look at her heaving bosoms all day!!! Ugh!!

This is the wife of Jose Rivera, the screenwriter for
Motorcycle Diaries. They didn't see her first name.

...but the black lace/cut outs remind me of Marie's spanish lace dress. I know...nothing like it....but has a little of that flavor..

Here's Beyonce Knowles. Do I see a trend for people to buy giant 80s earrings? a geometric variation on the chandelier earring and radical compared to the little teardrop things....
She definitely has the ability to influence young lady shoppers...

    WOW! I LOVE Clara Bow!!:wub::wub:

Thanks for the great "intro"! Lots of her films are amongst those that crumbled away due to neglect. One of her films, called 'Red Hair' supposedly has a whatever-second intro shot of her IN COLOR! - with electric-henna'd tresses blazing away. This was a non-talkie from 1926 - 27? maybe, and they had to do these special hand color processess to the film. It hadn't been done before. But, last I heard, no copy has survived.

Interesting thing with those old films from the beginning of the 20th century, is that a copy can show up at anytime from someone's attic or some forgotten storage facility. The amount of loss is still very tragic. I think something like 80 or 90% of the films made before 1930(?) are just cans of dust.

Anyway, I will not be watching the telly this evening, as I ain't got one. I haven't had one for years. I haven't seen a one of the current selection of movies and I really don't know who 1/2 of these people are, as I don't follow pop culture, for the most part.

Maybe I'll just go to a Clara Bow website and look through that! I'll check out the fashion images tomorrow.

    Have fun watching, folks!:bouncing:

I will post pictures of some of the gowns as they become available on the net or tomorrow morning.

Check out silentladies.com....loads of info there. There are some movies that were put on laserdisc back in (the 80s?). and are obscure too because not many people have laserdisc players anymore

A few years ago that was from. Bjork made fashion history or crowned herself as queen of the worst dress list depending on your perspective. It's supposed to be a Swan.

Ah, yes. And so it is a swan.

I love silentladies.com! I went through that a bout 3 years ago. I mean I just kept looking at ALL the photos.

I read a bio on Clara. It's a great book:
    http://www.silentsaregolden.com/recommendedreading/clarabow.html

    Ain't she purr-dee??

CRAZY as a squirrel, too, but the book gives her a fair shake. More than others have.

This site is great, too. The Film forum had a big retrospective on her a few years ago. I just went to look up the title of the book and ran across the film schedule, which includes 'Wings". I have a few printed copies from back then.

This is way off the subject, but sort of related...
Does anyone know how people get merchandise in those outrageous gift bags? I think they go to the presenters, but do all nominees get one, too?

Some of the merchandise is huge!! Like plasma tvs and trips! Like the stars can't afford the gifts, but wow it would be nice to get a goody bag like that at the next party you go to, huh? My guests just get drinks and apps (and a bit of long white dog hair on their clothes to take home!)!!

Molly that is an excellent question!

The nominees do get them too.

I don't know if there is a person is in charge of thinking the year's concept up and procurring it or do the companies just through freebies hoping to have stars recommend their products. Could be a bit of both.
