Love it! There is a well known similar anecdote from the 1920s, which if memory serves was quoted in a milliner's handbook. This is not exact but close. A lady tries on a hat at a famous milliner salon and she loves it but asks "why is priced at $38?. That is too much, it is really just a bit of fluff, and I will give you $5 for it". The milliner takes the hat off her head and slowly removes every trim, ribbon, flower and stitch, leaving a pile of it all on the counter and says to her "Here Madame, is $5.00 worth of materials...now go and make yourself a hat".

I wonder if that lady in the Worth story kept the gown!!!
