What kind of design is this? I believe the fabric is black linen with silk embroidery?

Please...Let me pick your brains...TIA ~Tori

Wow, that is fabulous!! I think it is 50s and have that tourist souvenir vibe to it. And BLACK!! Wow!!

I had something similar awhile back. Let me go see what I used for keywords.

That is about what I used unless you think sundress would still get hits. Be sure to use "resort". That would be for those already thinking about cruisewear.

I am trying to figure out what that little guy is. :puzzled: Maybe it will come to me in a minute.

The figure looks native & central/south american to me...Perhaps Aztec or Mayan?

The rest of the design looks art nouveau-ish.

Great find!

BTW, the plants next to the figure look like stylized corn plants, which would make sense since corn (maize) originated in Mexico/central america.

Sooo, 50's and Mexican Tourist?

OT: I was working my heini off editing pictures then my mom came over so I shut everything down, Long story short.....afternoon thunderstorm has arrived......lost all ambition so I think I'll head up to the local pub for a drink and conversation.

One more off topic before I leave....look what we got last night...She was my son's palmeranian sp? but she was snapping at the baby so we took her.....we now have 3 dogs and a cat....
Are you sure its Mexican/Aztec? It looks Cretan or Minoan to me ala palace of Knossos... with the greek key design and water pattern and the figure with the tiny waist.

I am 99% sure that' s Minoan/Cretan.

Tori, I think that's a woven brocade, not an embroidery.

Great set - and the purse is a bonus!

Nope, I'm not certain at all - it just reminded me of Mexican/Aztec figures. I know very little about Minoan/Cretan figures, so I didn't even think of that.

Hi,

I have seen garments with this kind of patterning before that were purchased in Greece...must have been sold at the local shops to tourists in the 1950s and I have also seen more 1960s styled items...always with the same kind of fabric used with the woven patterning often with the Greek Key motif.

Yours is very nice and you are lucky that you have the matching bag as well.

12. Wow, this gets even more interesting, cool.

:BAGUSE: I didn't really look at the rest of the design other than the figures and after having sold a few Estee Lauder Greek Key Perfume Compacts you would think I would have noticed that in the design....

It is a really beautiful set and the matching purse blew my mind away, I couldn't believe it stayed with the set all these years. I'm going to have fun writing this one up, NOT! :)
Thanks for all your help, you guys are great!

That design is from a very famous piece of art. Definitely Minoan/Crete. I can find it in one of my art books and post it if you'd like.

Hello,
Here is an idea for a title. I know that everyone has said that the dress is probably a Greek design, put since it does have an Aztec look to it, I think it would be helpful to put Mexican in the title.

50's Vintage Novelty Mexican*Greek Dress Set & Purse
or
50's Vintage Mexican*Greek Resort Dress/Skirt & Purse
or
50's Vintage Novelty Mexican*Greek Dress/Skirt &Purse

I kind of like the idea of getting skirt in there somewhere as the novelty skirts (especially mexican) have been hot this summer. Just some ideas, hope they help.

19. Hi Carrie, great keywords to work with, thanks so much :)
I like the second one best....

I started researching the figure after my last post then took a break and went to Hooters for lunch/dinner came back with a beer headache and started researching again and found that the figure of the man on the skirt is "The Prince of Lilies"
He is wearing the Minoan cod-piece and has a superb crown of lillies and peacock's feathers on his head. He may have been leading some sacred animal with his left hand. Palace of Knossos: end of the 15th century B.C.

Except that mine seems to have been done in reverse of the original?

So now I'll be able to work on a description of this set with out going in blind.. YAY! But after I get rid of this nagging headache.
Thanks again! ~Tori
