What type of leather is this bag made of?

I am having trouble identifying what type of leather this is. It’s the most velvety leather I have ever felt, and it is extremely delicate and very easily stained with water/oils. It was an estate find and i tested a small spot on the base with a very lightly dampened cloth, and the leather immediately stained and rubbed off a little. Lesson learned.

I don’t know a ton about skins, so im not sure if it’s calfskin or what. Looked at tons of photos and guides but can’t find another example that looks like this in terms of grain and lines.

Also, i think it’s 50s/early 60s, does that seem accurate?

    Thanks!

Back to the top. Hopefully some of the knowledgeable 'skins' folks will weigh in.
