What would you call this texture or fabric?

    My fabric blindspot kicks in again. I nice, thick, rich black, chevron-patterned fabric, in a 60s cocktail dress 'styled by Fredé' in Sydney:

    the top pic looks like textured velvet to me, the second looks machine embroidered. so i have no clue, but someone else surely will!

    If that isn't stitched it could either be a matelasse (sp?) or you could call it a sculputered or embossed fabric. I would only use that as a last resort I guess.

    Um... it may be embroidered/stitched... but it's quite deep 'relief' if you know what I mean. I think maybe I'll say sculpturally machine-embroidered, or stitched or something. Too wordy?!
