90s Style
Flannel, leather, velvet, denim, sheers—the 90s showcased it all. Starting with the thrift-savvy scene in Seattle to the Hip Hop world of bold, oversized denim, this decade defined music’s influence on fashion.
Grunge was just not a style or a sound, it was an attitude. Femme empowerment was packaged in a round collar extreme mini dress called the ‘babydoll’. Distressed, secondhand flannel and denim paired with leather moto jackets, t-shirts and Dr. Martens were all staples for both men and women. Marc Jacobs (for Perry Ellis) turned up the volume by combining these elements on the runway with a line of sheer, fruit-printed dresses, initiating a romantic, bohemian revival that would last through most of the decade.
The 1990s also experienced a 60s-70s wave due to Indie British and BritPop music popularity by mid decade. Daisy-printed dresses and rich textures of velvet, satin, and suede were matched with hip hugger bell bottoms. Some punk staples like the plaid mini skirt also saw demand.
These are the styles that usually come to mind when we think about 1990s fashion. The remaining half of the decade had some choice pieces like the slip dress which was often worn with an undershirt for a more casual look. Minimalism with bias-cut pieces served both comfort and flexibility.
This season, we celebrate the fashion that literally had its own soundtrack. The fashion of varied silhouettes, textiles, and vintage influence that we have come to refer to as the 90s Style!
