Appliqué & Embroidery
This week VFG members showcase two types of ornamental needlework with utilitarian roots. Originally devised as a way to cover holes or strengthen weak areas in garments to prolong their usefulness, appliqué refers to adding a smaller piece of fabric to a larger one. Over time, this technique became more artistic in nature, with patterns or representational scenes created through either hand or machine stitching. Embroidery too, was originally utilized as a mending technique, but soon, the simple act of decorating a piece of fabric with thread or yarn established itself as an art form, status symbol, and biographical tool.
