Maximalism

Oh, you haven't heard? Just turn up the volume really loud - Maximalism is the BIG news in fashion. Taking inspiration from '60s bohemian funk 'n' flash and a large helping of Harajuku street fashion, It's all about the art of overstatement - fun, colorful, multi-layered, dress to excess, anything and everything goes - and don't forget to bring the bling! Can't decide what to wear? No worries, put it all on! Bold is beautiful!

I source and list so much maximalism with my focus on the 80s, that it was difficult to choose just 5 vintage items to show. But here are four that I listed this week.

80s/90s SWEE LO brand beaded evening gown. Sz 8. Madame Swee Lo (Swee Lo O'Reilly) is an American designer that owned boutiques in New York, Palm Beach and Beverly Hills, knew one of the Baroness Rothschilds on a first-name basis, and developed the wardrobe for Mrs. Lovey Howell on the 3rd season of the Gilligan's Island TV show.

1990s GIACCA SPORT zip front bomber jacket in a novelty cotton print of retro luggage labels. Size M.

1980s ADAM DOUGLASS mostly purple rayon and faux suede Western influence button front shirt. Size 6.

1960s TOWN & COUNTRY "Four Seasons" Jeweled Handbag. No 1712, finished in original box with instructions and extra beads.

And from my sold archives - one of my all time favorite vintage finds. Y2K-era purple bejeweled heels by MIU MIU.

Karen, those shoes are just wild...the heels really are too much!!!lovecript

Thanks Mary Jane. Miu Miu isn't known for subtlety.

Your Victor Costa jacket is gorgeous! It's why I love the 80s.

Somewhat subdued example, but from the king of the Maximalists...
1980s Bob Mackie Gown

My hubby and I have been watching a bunch of old Carol Burnett reruns. I'd forgotten that Mackie did some of the designs for her show. You're right about him being a maximalist!

Great theme, so much fun to see everyone's offerings! The 80s was clearly the preeminent decade for maximalism, I think. But I'm shocked that I haven't seen anything by the Fries sisters yet.

On MagsRags.net, an 80s cocoon coat using a hand blocked print of fish and ocean waves by Ignacio Peri

Also 80s, this cocktail dress has a keyhole back and flippy mermaid-style skirt in addition to the whole illusion netting with beaded flames thing

The 1970s could be over-the-top too. Witness this evening dress with illusion lace with soutache for the bodice, and a glowing painted velvet skirt by Richilene

Another 70s piece, this one is by Pat Sandler, and is three chiffon pieces - palazzo pants, sheer tailored blouse, and long sash that van be used at the waist or the neck.

And back to the 80s, a cropped tux-style jacket from Yvonne O'Gara - she specialized in mixing vintage kimono fabrics - this side shot gives the best overview
