Scarface
Brian DePalma's Scarface is a twisted rags to riches tale of Tony Montana, an ambitious Cuban refugee and ex-convict who arrives penniless in Miami in 1980 and ascends to power as a ruthless drug lord. Released 40 years ago, the film was loved by movie-goers but assailed by critics for its graphic violence, profanity and depictions of drug use. In the intervening decades, those perceptions have shifted, and it is now considered one of the greatest gangster films ever made. A bona fide cult classic, it is referenced extensively in all corners of pop culture.
Patricia Norris's costumes reinforce the gauche excess of this world by melding the decadence of the Studio 54 disco era with the influence of its tropical setting. Michelle Pfeiffer's Elvira, the drug lord trophy wife, bares lots of skin, favoring slinky, minimalist Halston-esque gowns and suits. Tony and associates strut their stuff in Hawaiian shirts, light-colored or classic pinstriped suits paired with contrasting wide collared shirts, and no shortage of gold bling.
As the VFG takes aim at its best Scarface-influenced fashions, we also celebrate the birthdays of its two stars - Al Pacino on April 25, and Michelle Pfeiffer on April 29!
