Vintage Burberry Dating

Hi Everyone,

I have recently been given a Burberry Trench Coat by my dad that has sat in his wardrobe untouched for about 20 years and before that in my Grandads wardrobe for God knows how long! It only has a small Yellowing label under the main Burberry Label and no other info. It’s in great condition but can someone here help me identify the year it may be from? It has pass through pockets and I believe it’s pre 80’s but I’m no expert hence why I’m here :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi UncleMonks and welcome to the forums.

I found a few of these online and they seem to date from the '80s and '90s. In which case, you should have a care label. If you can find that (try the side seam) and post pics, it would be helpful. Thank you.

To be honest, I thought yours was likely older too, but seeing all the others online that are similar, with the same labels - plus the modern care labels - I can't help but agree. This style and these labels have been used fairly recently. If I were you, I would look carefully for care labels (they really are so useful in dating) and if you can't find any, look along the seams for traces of their removal.

For what it's worth, the logo lining also suggests that it's fairly modern - I remember when people started to produce logo lining in the '80s and it was so exciting! You do see it in earlier times (I have a few couture '50s skirt suits with it) but I haven't seen it in Burberry coats any earlier than this.

Thanks again for the replies! I have spoken to Burberry who tell me its a Camden Car Coat but they can only tell from the labels that it’s Pre - 1990. I have checked the whole Coat inside and out and there is no care label and no sign of one being removed. Unfortunately I don’t think I will ever be sure on the decade but one last question if anyone can help… the lining is free hanging, does anyone know if this could indicate which decade it may be from? It doesn’t seem common in any of the more modern coats!

Burberrys (with the S) is pre-1998, and the main inner label with the single apostrophe places it pre-1990 as they got rid of the ' sometime in the late 1980s. It is rather hard to place beyond that, you are correct! It is a fabulous coat regardless! I will ask @furwise Caryn, who specialized in fur coats, but does a bang-up job with linings too!

Hi there, your coat is difficult to date however I'd date it to the 80s.
As Jolene stated, The square label has an S at the end of it which makes it pre-1998 and it has the presence of the apostrophes which makes it pre-1990.
As Nicole said, the lining was seen in the 80s and after.
The Burberry square label looks like an 80s label.
The Burella All Wool Coating label matches those seen in some 80s Burberry coats, but the Burella label changed in the later 80s, with the addition of the letter S to the name Burberry, the font changed, and additional wording was added.
Let me show you what I mean about the difference in the Burella label. This is from a 90s Burberry coat.
