We are having a hard time dating this jacket. It’s a very thick and structured brocade. The sleeves are extravagant with pleated puffed shoulders and pointed elbows. Inside is lined in a satin? We found this amazing jacket with other items dating from the late 1890s-1930s. Hoping someone has any information or can help dating this lovely piece. Thanks for reading!

Ooooh. Isn't that charming!

I am not a fashion expert but I have never seen that cut of sleeve before. If I had to guess...40's?

The view of the back is particularly interesting.

I have never seen that fabric before. It's a wonderful piece!

You are welcome and the search has just started. :)

The arm shape has made me so curious. Do you think this may be a custom piece?

Many people when traveling through Asia would have a custom garment created for them while there.

For some reason this strikes as more Japanese than Chinese.

This would be worn over trousers or a skirt, yes? Maybe the 20's offered that?

I'm watching how your mystery unfolds!

Btw, your job sounds great!

It definitely could be a custom piece and we were also leaning towards Japanese. The estate this jacket came from was amazing, we also found a crazy quilt blanket dated 1894-1895 and 2 velvet and silk capelets along with this jacket (I attached photos).

When I look at that jacket, I wonder if it had the longer sleeves at one time? It's a delicious mystery.

The velvet crazy quilt is amazing. Wow!

Those capelets! Such fun to wear. They are scrumptious! Omgoodness, I can imagine how these would be used at the upcoming inaugural balls next month. Women would love these! Why three?

Was this person a designer? They had exquisite taste.

And you must be a sleuth to unlock all the secrets! Fun!

Japanese obi material made up into a coat for Western fashion use - I am going with late 30s, but it might be later with closer examination. if the lining is heavy then it would be postwar.
