That's a great candidate for restoration as its beaded onto net. The entire dress can be appliqued onto a new net dress. It will take a lot of time but you would end up with a fantastic dress. The ones beaded onto silk chiffon are hopeless - nothing you can do but save the beads - this one can...
It looks like a 1930s summer evening jacket - probably went over a simple slip type dress that you could wear while dancing and then you put this on at dinner or to arrive/leave. They were popular middly-late 30s 34-38ish
Later than 46/47 would make sense - if the Met says 59, then I am sure they are right. The silver metal zipper is more typical of post 1950, most zippers were brass until 1950 - this isn't a 100% rule, but its more typical. The dress looks more early 50s to me as it doesn't have a strong...
Marcelle Alix was only around for a few years in the mid-late 1940s. It was the former atelier created by Alix Barton (who was later known as Mme Gres). The zipper safely puts this after the war, but I think the house was gone by 1948, so the dress has to date from c. 1946-47.
You might be right Melanie - I didn't look at the pics up close - they could be later. I can't remember the year or two Vivier had that contract in Japan, I thought it was late 60s from the two pairs I saw, but its been a while.
It's early 1910s - the big buttons running up the skirt off to the side and the highish waist are typical of c. 1912. They aren't the most fashion-conscious couple - they are middle aged and look to be in a somewhat rural or frontier environment, so the clothes are plain and serviceable.
(I can't help but read your title in Yoda's voice! lol)
Remember that scene in Rear Window where Grace Kelly shows up at Jimmy Stewart's apartment with a discrete overnight bag? This looks like the identical bag to me, although hers was black.
I have run across two pairs of these before and I did read a small snippet about it somewhere - probably Women's Wear Daily... Vivier had a line produced in Japan primarily for the Asian market for a very short period of time 1967-68ish.
If they are smooth white kid, try Q-tips dampened with the suds from washing up liquid. Do it in front of the TV one night because you have to do it in small areas and it takes a lot of time. Don't soak the Q-tip because you don't want to make the leather wet, but you want enough of the suds to...
