Vacation plans & shopping for vintage?

Nobody shops for vintage on vacation, or has ever stumbled upon a really special vintage item while on vacation? Hmmm.... I find it odd that my DH & I must be the only ones....

Vacation plans & shopping for vintage?

Well, it's that time of year when many of us have made, or are making, our summer vacation plans. Do you plan your vacation spots around where you can go "shopping" for vintage? Or do you plan to include some side forays to shop? Do you take vacation day trips to shop? We usually manage to...

    The importance of mending

That is SO beautiful. It speaks to things our society as a whole has lost--the ability to rise above adversity and repair marriages, relationships, communities--all of this in the larger sense. But also the will to make new out of old, "make do" instead of needing to "have new," working with...

    Way OT~ Young Men Wanted

Von, good luck with this project... All my "boys" are either too young, or too old. I do have one nephew in this range, though. I'll send the link to my sister to give to him!

Hat check... for ladies or gentlemen?

That is a really sharp hat... (and my size, too!) Agree with everyone else on ladies' hat and the dating. Though I tend to think maybe more early 70s than late 60s. If it fits you, and you love it, keep it!

    Am I a 40's dress? and WWYD?

Von, just checking in after being away over the holiday, and gotta say, wow!!!! What a fantabulous piece! And I'm glad for Nicole she grabbed it, but I'd have been sorely tempted to make you an offer as is, and take in that side seam. Sounds like it would be fixable to make this wearable...

    It's a Lingerie Line-up~

Gorgeous selections, Sharon! I am such a sucker for vintage lingerie--I buy it, I wear it, I sell it, I collect it.... Modern lingerie cannot hold a candle to vintage.

    HTML gurus: help needed, please!

I'm at my wits' end here; if anyone can help, I'll be 4-ever in your debt. I'm trying to create anchor links for my website items, to link from my gallery page to a specific item on its page. I haven't felt the need to use them before now because I didn't have that many items on each page...

    an off-topic find...

Ruth, I LOVE this! Are there any markings on the bottom, and if so, what do they say? It looks 70s doing 50s to me, due to the orange color. What size is it? I'm not sure I'd call it a snack plate unless it's small; if larger, it could be a serving plate for condiments or relishes. We have a...

    Who's That Girl?

Oops, I goofed. We knew it was B that was Claudette; I just typed the wrong letter! Oh, well, you snooze, you lose (or in my case, you make a typo).

    Who's That Girl?

Is C Claudette Colbert? And H Jane Russell? As my DH just noted, women sure looked like women back then! So many of these gals look so familiar, but so young we're havin' a hard time placing them!

100 Reasons I Love VFG! Add Yours!

All of the above, of course! And, how about this for #30: Very special (especially to me who works out of my home all the time) is the connection with real folks in the real world who "get" what I do and understand the sometimes lonely existence this can be, and the importance of having a...

Help with this Italian Raffia bag, please

Thanks, Carrie; I was hoping you'd stop by! I think the "fabric" might be a linen & silk blend--there was a lot of that going around in the 60s, I'm finding out. And in looking at the clasp closely, I think it was hand fashioned and pieced--it's a little Italian work of art!

Help with this Italian Raffia bag, please

Hey, all, can you help me with this bag (which I am in love with...)? Get a load of that huge, fab clasp! Would this be 1960's era? It's Italian made, with the lining being hand stitched in. Also, would it be accurate to call this "crocheted" raffia? The weaving looks like a crochet stitch to...

Date check on 50s/60s dress, & how to describe the print

Carrie, it's really beautiful!!!! And I, too, love the jacket. With jacket on, at a glance, I was thinking late 50s, but without, the dress looks early 60's to me. The colors look kinda 60s to me, as well as the stylized leaves and floral scrolls. That wrought-iron look would go great in my...

    Astra Clip-on Earrings Question

If you decided you would want to replace those rhinestones, and don't have any you can take out of a damaged piece that match, there's a guy who does replacement rhinestones on vintage & antique jewelry, and he's very reasonable, with fast turnaround. Can't rememember his website, but his name...

    Astra Clip-on Earrings Question

Gorgeous earrings! You could try the pads, and/or the Comfee Key--which I've never heard of but which sounds like a fabulous thing to have. These look as if they weren't worn much at all, and you may find that with wearing them often for short periods, they will "loosen" up a bit.

cool Geronimo fringed jacket with issues WWYD?

Mary, that jacket is so special. If she still fits you, I'd keep her and wear her! Because it is so light I wouldn't use the neatsfoot oil, either; though it does work wonders on leather, it can darken lighter shades. There is a company (website: leathertherapy.com) that has a product used...

Sizes in headings and international selling

I like the S/M/L/XL myself, as it gives you the option of specifying the range of size the garment will fit, since they'll often fall between sizes. You can use, e.g., L/XL and it doesn't take up many characters. Now, that's on vintage sizing. When I sell modern clothing, I generally use the...

Help, please with this Abby Kent dress

Ah, Nicole, I'm guessing you did use too much. It's not really supposed to be like a glue. It only "seals" the edges of holes or areas that are fraying and likely to continue to fray if left alone. As I said, I dab it on with the end or edge of a toothpick so as not to use too much. I used to...

Help, please with this Abby Kent dress

Hi Mary Catherine--great to "see" you! And I "knew" there must be a name for that, and how dumb am I--given that I "only" collect men's neckties and have a ton of silk foulards.... Never thought to apply it to a dress.... Thanks!

Help, please with this Abby Kent dress

Nicole, thanks for your perspective! I know what you mean--I'd rather do repairs myself when buying, as I can typically can do them more meticulously than I "assume" others will--I'm willing to take the time to be neat, and I've seen things from other sellers done obviously in a hurry! But as...

    What's Your Era?

I envy those of you who are so knowledgeable about the earlier eras--once I get earlier than say, late 40s, I'm usually out of my element--except in lingerie. There I crave the 30s & 40s, and have a lot of it in stock, so am learning a lot about it. Being born in the 50s, I remember my mom...

Help, please with this Abby Kent dress

Hi Suzanne! Glad you weighed in on this. It is one of my very favorites of the ones I got from you (thank you again, BTW), and has intrigued me.... I like Abby Kents, and this is my oldest one. Linn, the label is woven, but the fabric's pattern is printed. And, ladies, can you assist me...

Thank you, Jluthye and trell.... I was really starting to lean late 40s the more I looked at it, and y'all have helped me over the edge! Late 40s it is, then! And do you like it with or without the crinoline?

Oh, dear I have a lot of questions on this cute dress. I would really appreciate your help! Pardon the overabundance of photos, but I need to show them to get proper input on my questions. Ok, first, dating. I "think" this is 50s, but I'm thinking earlier than later? The skirt seems longish...

    What's Your Era?

What\'s Your Era? Instead of "What's your sign?" vinties ask, "What's your era?" on meeting new people! So, what's your era/eras? What do you like to collect and/or wear for yourself, and what do you like to buy for resale? Personally, my favorite eras for my own personal wear or use are...

Ye olde photos - care to share?

Oh, what wonderful photos! I have several of my parents, dating back a long, long time, but they're not scanned in. I'll have to see what I can do about that! And I have to find some of me in the late 60s & early 70s in my mod and hippie gear.....
