Diffraction Grating Jewelry--are these that?
Here are the earrings I have that look like a modern-day CD, with rainbow colors changing as they are turned in the light. The discs are plastic and are backed by what looks like a resin material.
Are these diffraction grating construction?
I took a look at the one I have that I know is old--late 30s into the mid 40s. It's pure silk, thin, and does not have the striped effect on the reverse side. It's solid, low sheen (not like the luster of the proper side), and the embroidery stitching shows through all the way.
The striped...
Carrie, they're adorable; I love them, and I love Italian shoes. I used to take a size 37 1/2 but I think my feet are a size larger now that I've had surgery on one.... Will you be listing them on Ruby Lane?
Leisa, can't help on the date... These all look so similar in style to me! I recently purchased an estate lot, and a cheongsam was in it. If it wasn't for the fact that I know that it's from the late 30s to mid 40s, I wouldn't know to save my life.
But, I do want to say how nice yours is...
I love both outfits! I had seen the gown in photos yesterday, but had only read about the coat & boots. I personally think the boots were not only very stylish, but very practical given the weather. Michelle Obama's legs must've been freezing, but I bet Jill's were comfy.
Hey, when you look...
I loved the gown! The shape, the train, etc. And, unlike some of her dresses, I thought this one flattered her figure enormously. Some papers this a.m. are describing it as white, and some as yellow. Agree w/Jonathan about the oddly set shoulder strap, though. I think it would've looked fabulous...
Ooh, your Hanae Mori sounds wonderful--you shoulda worn it!
LOL! I do the same thing... I just got a phone with a camera in it, and keep forgetting to snap photos when I see something I "think" I want to buy, but want to go home and do some research and/or post it here for questions. All...
With those backs, Beth, I'd say late 50s or early 60s. I've had 40's beaded earrings similar to those, but the backs have been very different--obviously old, nearly solid discs wired to the earrings.
Loved the outift and color, though I normally don't care for yellow, but this was a deeper golden color. The jeweled neckline is, I thought, rather Jackie-O/60's reminiscent....
Loved the shoes, but not so much with the outfit....
Would love to see photos! Did the golfers come out for it? I play golf, and would love to once in my life attend one of the big fancy parties associated with a tournament like that.
I've been to lots of big tournaments, but never have had the chance to do the accompanying partying &...
It\'s still cold.... Brrrr....
A couple of warm, winter dresses just listed at Vintage Baubles. (I know it's late to be listing wool & velvet dresses, but here in the Northeast, it's freezin'!)
This wool Anne Fogarty 50's "paper doll" full-skirted dress
and this 80's Victor Costa lush...
The more I look at those panels, the more I think they were likely meant to be tied, loosely and in a (loose) square knot, probably, draped for a "V" effect, if they will be so kind as to fall that way..... Or straight across the top of the back, perhaps in a large, loose bow. I think they are...
Stunning!!!!
I do think flyaway panels is what they're typically called, though I think the panels I've seen are usually stitched on for a longer seam across. I'd also try tying them in back and see how that looks.
Ooh, there are so many I like, but for Michelle, the ones I think would look striking on her and flatter her figure the best are the Karl Lagerfeld (so simple but elegant), the Michael Kors, and the Tracey Reese. I think I like the Tracey Reese the best. I adore some of the more detailed...
It does look like azalea, now that you mention it, Mary! I had azalea bushes at my old house, and yes, these do look like that.... (I guess I was right about the hibiscus and didn't know it)
Lovely fabric and print! Mary's info on the silk is spot on. Many people use the terms Dupionni Silk and Shangtung silk interchangeably because normally you can't tell "where" it comes from just by looking at it (though I suppose someone who's a top-notch expert in fabrics might know the...
Can't help on the flower (I was actually gonna say it didn't look like hibiscus to me, but Linn knows more about that than I would!), but that sure is a terrific dress, Kim! Is that a Roxanne by any chance?
I agree it's difficult to ascertain just what a "novelty print" is.... Great topic for discussion!
I would call your lovely print a "watercolor novelty print." I think the term watercolor evokes the sort of softness and abstractness of your print. Even though there are recognizable elements...
I read the same thing that Kristine did... There was a big article about it in our paper last week. According to that, they're going to exempt thrifts & consignment stores, except for items that are known to have high lead content or that there's a likelihood they would have. Most clothing...
Carrie, I love the color of that dress, and the buttons are really cool.
I''m thinking your dating sounds pretty good! Tough (for me, anyway) to say whether it falls solidly into either the 40s or the 50s. Cusper?
Very nice dresses, all three. I get a later 40s vibe from the brown one rather than late 30s or early 40s. I totally agree on the 40s & 50s dates for #2 & #3, respectively.
I agree with Deborah on the date--late 60s into early 70s. On, this would have a sort of saucy, swingy look to it. Perfect over dress slacks or mini dresses/skirts with opaque stockings or tights. It looks to be a nice quality faux fur.
Amanda, you have some really wonderful buttons there! I just ran across an eBay seller (I'm bidding on one of her jewelry items) who has lots of vintage and antique buttons for sale. Seems to be doing quite well with them--sets and individuals. Some of the singles she has priced at $5 each...
Well, I'm not sure if my distinction between Colonial and Early American Traditional is accurate, but I think there are techically differences.
I tend to think of Colonial as the heavier, bigger furniture, like cannonball beds, big dressers, and dining room tables with the thick, turned...
