Fabric Friday: Satin weave and satin

I have encountered so many vintage lovers that can't seem to grasp that satin fabric is made from something. Satin is so lovely I can understand the feeling that it must have been bestowed by the gods. By approaching satin as a type of weave-the way fabric is put together with threads (fibers)...

Fabric Friday: Balanced, equal fabrics, 1/1, 2/2 etc.

Excellent as always. I heard back from Britex. They charge $2 for each swatch. The smallest amount of fabric they will sell is 1 yard. They did not mention postage, but swatches would obviously be letter size and weight. Since you use all your senses in identifying fabrics, it is so helpful...

Fabric Friday: Determining the fiber of a fabric

As I have noted before in another post, the admonition we got as children to not play with fire, really stuck. We are not recommending starting a bonfire. A tiny, tiny flame is enough-over a sink, a metal pan, a flower pot, an ash tray... Be brave, Marian

    Fabric Friday!

Thank you, thank you, Maggie. I will be so happy if we can even get across the basic concept (except for linen, as you noted) that fabric names have two parts. Satin, tweed or taffeta is just not enough. You spelled out very well why it is important to know more. Fabric is made of something...

    Vintage linens anyone?

Me too. Actually there is quite a bit of cross-over with clothing: fabrics, lace, embroidery, and much more. Also, there was a trend in the 1970's to make skirts from tablecloths, bodices from pillowcases, etc. Marian

A mystery item. Possibly part of an antique nurses uniform?

I think Lynne may be on to something. If the ties are long enough to tie around the waist, could it be used to carry dust cloths or sliver cleaning supplies? The heavy material was also worn by cleaning workers. A hospital housekeeper? Marian
