Help from someone who knows their silk slips?

That slip is stunning! It is possible the straps were altered more recently and the plastic adjustment sliders added then. The machine topstitching on the straps also does not look right for the workmanship of the remainder of the garment. But it also could be a modern very high end slip made in...

    Vintage shoes (advice)

Wow! They are incredible and yes they are absolutely originals from the 1970's. I used to collect vintage 1940's shoes, so can offer some tips as best as I can. I would first give the shoes a careful 'drink'to renourish that leather. For this you could use some thing like unperfumed lanolin, or...

Funny and fabulous article about historical costume accuracy

This is one of my favourites from Karolina Zebrowska on the subject of Costume Design for period film. She also has one on Emma too!. Some of my best friends are costume designers I must say- It's not always about being historically accurate, as much as we wish it was. There are so many other...

Help with Half-Slip date and lining

Sounds like Acetate Taffeta ( Paper Taffeta) to me, it has a plastic feel and stiffness to it, so is excellent fabric choice for holding out the hem of a full petticoat. It sadly has been rather badly cut but the original owner hasn't it!

Is there a way to repair this Mr. Blackwell?

Hi Maggie, as Claire said, and yes a light silk and/or a georgette would work well.

Is there a way to repair this Mr. Blackwell?

Such an amazing outfit- and so sad this has happened! Lame is a nightmare sometimes.... I would put a similar fabric behind the area, and some net or cobweb gauze and do lots of rows of fine hand stitching across and down to contain this. OR Lame hates heat, but you could be brave and with a...
