Here are two pins that really say Easter to me:
This this late 1930's Coro moonglow basket :

And this flower basket brooch and matching earrings with glorious Margarita stones...
Looks fabulous, Maggie -
Great photos and a great blog. Love the photo of you in that dress, too!
According to the article I posted from the Honolulu Star-Advertiser earlier this week, the exhibit, started its tour in California at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles before...
Just want to weigh back in on the Aloha Shirt being or not being '50's. I really don't know - it could be '50's. When I looked at a lot of labels in some of my books on Aloha Shirts some of the labels (on the men's shirts) do have S, M, L - and even ML so that sizing has been around for...
I don't sew (either) and would take it to someone to fix. I would only fix it myself it I were planning to keep it because my hand stitching is not a pretty sight.
Sgt. Peppery is a great description! I think it's a fun set, too.
I just clicked on the link to the sewn in label to the Aloha shirt that DeLabelle posted in reply #15 - and to the left under Rayon. The label has Japan on it - so it appears that the hand screened print fabric is from Japan. Some of the fabric that was used in the early Aloha shirts made in...
There is a label on the second shirt if you click on "tag detail" but it does not match the other two labels. I think that shirt is '50's and the other one is newer.
I have several books on Aloha attire and there is no information about Pardise Isle, the label on your dress and the shirt in...
Thanks for weighing in on this, Carrie. I really do get a '50's Modernist feeling from Sandra's bracelet and am glad you remembered the other thread.
This one is not similar except perhaps in scale. The clasp is not lined and it's chrome, but I'm quite sure it's '50's:
Sandra -
As long as you are taking a picture of the bracelet please get a shot of the entire piece - not just the metal and show it next to something like a quarter so we can get a sense of the scale. Also, please show the clasp in the position that you showed it in the first photo - with...
I am not at all sure about dating it which is why I didn't post again yesterday. I cannot get a sense of the metal or the color of the metal from the pictures. I said chrome before I saw the latest photos which look like it has a golden brown tinge. In the first photo it looks blueish and...
This Weiss brooch is something I can picture Elizabeth Taylor wearing - in rubies (or pink tourmalines) and diamonds - of course:

Here are some "sapphire and diamond pieces" available on RL:

Sandra -
It is probably chrome - and would or could be chrome whether it's '30's or '50's! Please take a picture of it spread out flat front and back showing the whole clasp not just the top part. It still might be hard to decide when it's from but that might help. I'll look through...
I cannot tell from the pictures if it's Period Art Deco - C. 1930's or Mid-Century Modern - C. 1950's. The clasp looks more '50's to me. It's really hard to tell from your photos - one looks "blue" on my monitor and the other has a brownish cast.
Do you have any idea what the metal is?
Sandra -
Please show a picture of the construction - from the back. While this could be Art Deco it could also be Modernist C. 1950's.
What is the metal? Any markings?
I was just reading today's Honolulu paper a little bit earlier and there is a wonderful article about Alfred Shaheen and the exhibit opening this Thurs. at WSU. (Washington State University in Pullman, WA.)

Maureen,
I'm not an expert on fans, either, but I think they are both older. I tend to agree with Mary Jane on the dating and description of them due to the decorative painting and motifs. I did a little bit of searching and the closest I can find to the first fan - and it's not the same...
Maureen -
It looks like a short mu'u mu'u - or maybe a little cover-up with the tie at the back. As I'm sure you know, The Royal Hawaiian is a hotel - one of the oldest in Waikiki and is still in business. (They just finished a major renovation.) There are lots of shops in the hotel now...
I think it's early '60's - C. 1962-1963 because of the assymetry and the 3/4 sleeves. Jackie Kennedy's trip to India and Pakistan was in 1962 and except for being more covered it reminds me of the colorful pastel silks she wore on that trip. If you Google images of Jackie Kennedy trip to...
I sold this BSK, "My Fair Lady" pin ages ago but it cerainly fits into the theme:
I restoned this piece - it had dead or dying clear stones. I sold it, too:
I'm not sure about the first one but the other two look late '60's early '70's to me. Have you read the "Quick Tips for Dating Vintage" - on our website? You can find this under VFG Resources. Some clues for dating (besides the the style and length, etc.) are Union Labels if there are...
The only way to be sure of the metal is to have it tested. The style looks late '60's to me - was it purchased "new" or at an antique shop?
I am not a jeweller but it is my understanding that white gold is usually plated with rhodium to get it super shiny. I have many rings that are set...
I agree, Melody-
The second one looks much older - probably Czech or Czech glass and '30's. The first one looks '50's or early '60's "Victorian Revival" style.
Karin -
You look great in all of your finds! I know exactly what you mean - I think the only pieces I have added to my wardrobe that are not vintage are underwear, shoes (cannot buy without trying on) and some inexpensive caridgans that I throw over my shoulders. I do have lots and lots of...
Great finds! Love the orange dress and bet you look fabulous wearing it. Glad you had a great vacation and successful vintage shopping in Denver. It sounds like you've been there before - why Colorado rather than closer to home for skiing???
There are early pierced earrings from the 19C-1910 and there are pierced earrings from the 1920's-1930's, but once clips became popular (patented in the US in 1934) more costume earrings were made with this finding. Screwback earrings were available from about 1896 (have to look this up for...
