This is a very "typical" '40's Retro Style brooch. It is similar to this one that I have listed on RL - although mine is marked Sterling:

Yes - there is a difference. Here's one online conversion chart:

Nicole will probably weigh in if it's not accurate.
I agree with Hollis on this. Very late '40's to early '50's. I have seen zippers on the right - in fact I have a '40's dress with a zipper on the right but I agree it's unusual. I don't think the buttons go down the back but try it on that way and see what you think. Also agree it had a belt.
Karin -
See if the buttons are cold are warm. If they are cold they are glass. You can touch the button to your lips and should be able to tell if they are warm or cold.
I think it's very early '60's. Dress lengths were shorter in the early '60s' than the late '50's although as Anne said since it is homemade the original owner could have been short!
Not sure I agree about a necklace - sometimes they can detract rather than add. I do agree that her make-up is underwhelming - her hair is "meh" to use a new favorite word - and the dress does not fit her well. I think she needed some really strong makeup and upswept hair. When I looked at...
I don't speak or read German but I think handarbeit means handmade and Mod. Ges. Gesch is a term for "patented" or registered. It was used in jewelry and other products.
Love the shoes!

The only barkcloth item I have is this dress which I did not try on and is a little too small in the hips. It also has an almost thigh high slit on the side. I will probably sell it when I get around to it:
I found it at a Show here in Hawaii and although I measured it - I don't think...
I came accross a blog about barkcloth that shows a wonderful circle skirt - and some other great pieces of fabric!

I agree that it's barkcloth - and would also like to see the skirt! Julie - love the skirt you sold. I've looked at barkcloth skirts a few times at shows but they are usually pretty heavy and therefore too "warm" for here.
