I agree with Jonathan: it was a very uncool thing to wear in the early '80s.
I wore a Harrington in '83-84 but it was a navy one with tartan lining borrowed from my Mod boyfriend: they were imported into Australia by a punk shop and very popular in the British subcultures: but no one wore them...
The labels look much newer than the purse: can you tell how the label is applied? Perhaps it was glued on - it does look like an upcycled vintage purse (and the upcycler added the label and swing tag).
Hi Jess Ica, and welcome to the forums.
Lovely bag: it's best to start a new thread but before you do, I wanted to mention that although we can help you date the bag, we can't authenticate it here. It's best to take it to an Hermes specialist as photos are limited in the information they...
Hi Jenny,
I don't know how to date lederhosen either but a few ideas:
You're dealing with one of the most traditional designs around so focus on the fabrics eg: is that a cotton lining I see around the waistband?
Look at construction - eg, what sort of thread, stitches, finishing, the button...
Hi Lauren,
I think they might be scarf clips. Styles like these with pictorials were popular in the '60s but the backs suggest they might be earlier: perhaps they were buttons that have been adapted? Can you tell if the painted part is hand painted or printed, and if it's on porcelain, glass or...
I can't see what's happening with the sash, so I'm not sure what you mean but I think the top button was moved, as the drape isn't hanging well - and it's too high for a '20s style but would work for a '30s so I think it's an update.
Hi Brooke,
Can you please confirm whether there are two loops on the right hand side to secure with buttons, or just one? I can only see one, but there are two buttons on the left so I'm wondering if the bottom one was original and the top one added to turn a '20s opera coat into a dress.
If...
Hello Bilosnizhka and welcome to the forums.
Interesting set: it looks like a silk moire' taffeta to me. You can read more about moire here at the fabric resource.
As to the era and style, it's a little hard to see what's going on, especially with regards to the neckline - I can see a slit but...
I can't be sure what's happening in the photo so can't advise on the name, sorry. It does look like the fabric has been accordian pleated though.
Also I can't date without a full length and label pics but these are generally late '40s to '50s. If you can show more pics it will help.
I agree with the dating and that your description is good, and also that they would have had a matching jacket originally.
I only have a couple of things to add: they might have been meant to be worn even more high waisted - see how they are when your model sits down, and how low the crotch is...
Hi Jen,
Lovely nightgown! I work on the theory that all underclothes can be hand washed, as our grandmothers wouldn't be dry cleaning their scanties - so I recommend hand washing this in mild detergent and line drying after gently squeezing out excess water. If that doesn't lift the stain I...
Melanie, those pieces look similar to some Victorian aprons I've got - so they may not be related to folk costume.
Thanks for reviving this interesting post though. I studied a unit of folk dress at college and it rarely comes in handy. In fact I'd forgotten about it - I specialised in French...
You're most welcome!
I can't help you on the oxidisation but the fabric looks really good, I can't see any flaws - silk and metallics are hard to clean when they have stains but it's beautiful I wouldn't try to remove as you're likely to damage.
