Lovely floral detail.
Plousia, my initial reaction was a late '30s to '40s dinner dress, based on the distinctive shoulder and sleeve header cut and seaming, and the fabric looks like it might be a matelasse, which was popular for nicer dresses at that time. Being a bigger size requires a...
It sounds like there's a synthetic component. If you check your supermarket they should have a spot cleaner that is suitable: I would apply to the interior to minimise staining.
I always think of those sorts of slide catches as being '60s-70s, I don't think they were available any earlier.
It's a lovely purse, the tooling is really nice.
Any other labels or marks anywhere? I think I see something in the interior, all clues are helpful.

Hi, I can't see enough detail to discern whether the fabric is silk crepe or not, but the ruffles look like they might be crush pleated silk georgette or silk chiffon. I don't think that's (crush pleat) an official term, but they're definitely pleated and not as structured as the usual pleats...
It's hard to say without knowing more, but I do encourage you to research what others are selling for: check out auction results. Ebay realised prices (you can access through Advanced Search) and auction houses. One of the services I use is 'Invaluable', it lists realised prices at a number of...
Only VFG members can post links to selling sites here but you're welcome to post photos and ask for advice.
Every marketplace has its strengths and weaknesses: it's about finding the right place for what you're selling. \\
I've only sold through ebay (bargain hunters paradise) and my own...
Hi Emily, and welcome to the forums.
The photo is a little small for me to read the writing: can you tell us what it says please? Are there any labels or other logos anywhere?
We can't help you with a valuation but if you can share more information - maybe even a photo of the piece as whole -...
Can you take them to an optometrist? They should be able to help with dating. There are differences with older plastics and the new versions, and older tend to be narrower as they're built for smaller faces.
I can't tell the date of these but seeing them in person might help. I always date...
Hi Elin and welcome to the forums. I can't see enough detail to be sure of date but from what I understand, if it has a dot it's Croc and so yours is likely alligator. Here's the VFG alligator page, it has some useful information which can help you determine. There's also one on crocodile if...
I'm not familiar with that product, it may not be available in my country. As mentioned, start with determining fibre content. The products should list the materials they are suitable for.
In general, I avoid spot removers though, and apply any treatment to the whole garment because sometimes...
Hi BGVintage, the method to remove the staining will vary depending on the fabric composition: if it's a synthetic organza (likely with '70s) there's one product and a different product if it's a silk organza. You speak of the fragility, but my experience is that it's a strong material unless...
Hi Attic Rescues and welcome to the forums. Best if you can start a new thread and post photos of your garment please. This thread has lots of info about getting the best results. Thank you.
I've never seen a Burberry's coat like this and wonder could it possibly be a dressing gown? The buckle-less belt is more typical of a boudoir style, and the piping gives it a pyjama-y look too. But I searched and couldn't find anything like it, of any description.

Hi CaptMicha, in my experience, the main reasons why a garment doesn't sell comes down to the following:
you're offering it in the wrong marketplace
there's a specific detail that reduces the market: eg. small size, unfashionable style or colour, damage.
the price is too high.
perhaps if...
There are a couple of Australian companies trading off the name in the '40s-50s too. Maybe they saw an opportunity after Gabrielle closed in the war?
One of the Aus labels is in the label resource, it says 'Chanel gowns' with a Kings Cross (Sydney) address and an accent over the 'e'.
I've also...
Hi Nicole,
I had a quick look and couldn't see anything similar - Fendi is one of those brands that has increased in productivity and popularity so on the upside, your garment is rarer, and is probably not a copy, but on the downside: harder to find information.
I'm based in Melbourne...
Coincidentally, I just came across a 1940s basketball outfit that was sold by auctioneers Davis Brothers a few years ago. It has some similarities. Link here. They liked stripes, that's for sure.
Just as we can't authenticate, we can't value either but (as a professional valuer) I can tell you that a proper appraisal needs to be done in person, not from photos like these, so all the elements can be taken into account. And I charge a fee for my services.
A cheaper and easier alternative...
Thanks for posting it right way up Donna. Now I can see the name 'Sonia' or maybe 'Sonia W'.
As a costumier myself, I see a Renaissance-style costume piece here, not fashion. You can see it's well-made, suggesting theatrical costume. Hard to date as older techniques are often used by...
These camel-coloured cotton corduroy mens jackets with knotted leather buttons were very fashionable in the mid to late '70s.
They were so popular that once the fashion passed, they looked very dated so I doubt it was made later than 1980.
Hi Beccy, I note that your survey appears to be directed at people in the UK. As an international group we have members from all around the world. Are you interested in responses from other countries?
I concur with Claire, in that the number is an sequential order number and you'd need a lot of them, with accurate datings for them to be useful to date your garment.
The short answer is that somewhere in the YSL office and factory/s there would have been a book with the order details, but...
Thank you, it makes such a difference to see a garment being worn. And it does indeed have the dropped shoulder style that was popular in the 1980s but those full sleeves look more like the late '70s to early '80s so I think early '80s is the likely date.
If you unpick the label to see the...
You've got some good suggestions here, to which I'll only add that your tailor or seamstress will likely have some suggestions and may even have some good fabric on stock, or suppliers who offer discounts. So I would ask them for their opinion as they will likely have preferences too.
I had a dress in the late '80s with this exact print, but the silhouette is not of that time. It's a tricky one to date, however the lack of a seam allowance, where the seams haven't been sewn per se with a sewing machine but just overlocked suggest it's fairly modern: no earlier than 1990s but...
