Good enough an explanation for me, Chris! Makes sense, and if you've seen it before, surely that's got to be the answer. But this is why we like vintage, right? Because they took the time to make quality things that last. Sure beats a plastic doodad holding the tag on : ).
So I was right about the tag theory? Wow. Seems like a lot of work just for attaching a tag! Thanks very much, Chris. It IS a very nice dress. Perfect for the holidays, no?
Hi everyone. Here's a ypical 60s rollneck poly dk dress. Nothing unusual there. It's got an ILGWU (63-74) and size tag, so not homemade. BUT... what's with this thread belt loop? It's directly below the left armpit. And no, Nicole, it's not a thread that's pulled through. It's a true...
Yes Laura,
Definitely dense and well made. Belonged to a doctor's wife. I knew just what the clasp would have looked like (you've confirmed it), and I suppose I could pay to have it refashioned. But I'm not going to bother. Not selling it for much. Trying to keep prices affordable without...
Tiffany -- Sorry. I'd meant to type "silver + pearl." I don't know that it's 0.925% silver (sterling), nor do I know if the pearls are faux, natural, or cultured. Those things I can easily find out. What I can't determine as easily is when/where it's from. Do you have any idea?
Hi -- No clue when this is from, but again, it belonged to someone quite old, and the earring back style is of a certain era. I've replaced the missing bracelet clasp with a temporary fix that is clearly not what was originally there, but at least holds it on your wrist for the time being. The...
Pretty little brooch marked only "SILVER" -- no other clues (beyond its design/clasp and its having belonged to someone very old). Expert opinions as to its age and origin, please? Thanks - Liza
Hello,
I've never seen this particular style of clasp before. You press in at the end to lock the mechanism in place (pull to open). It's not "automated" -- it doesn't spring open or closed. The brooch itself is shell and faux (I think) pearls. The pearls are wired in place (two are missing due...
Hi ladies -- It does not appear to have been shortened. No evidence of an older hem fold. But it's possible. It was definitely opened at the bottom back (I reclosed it by stitching the buttons through both sides). I'm guessing the actress needed a bit more freedom of movement than the dress...
Hi, This dress (another from the local theater) has two labels. The first is "Southland Fashions / Dickson & Ives / Orlando, Florida." I've learned that department store Dickson & Ives was in business from 1944 through April 1965.
I've found only one comp for Jeane Scott by Margot (on Beans &...
Uh oh, really? It's a distinct possibility, based on the lady's age. Although MOST of her stuff was 50s/60s, and nearly all came from Rich's and Davison's. Still, I'd better update my listing (and raise the price!).
oops -- that's "of 2".
This is from the same estate as the black grosgrain beret. No labels. Has a "mohair" soft, fuzzy quality but I think it's actually fur felt. Interior is not brushed. The color's a bit off in the photos. I'd describe it as very light coffee. Cafe au lait.
All of this...
All from an estate where the items ranged from 40s through 60s (she was too old for fashionable new clothes beyond that point). First up, a Brighton of California grosgrain beret. Snappy, no? I really like this one. Tag looks vaguely modern, but no way this lady was buying/wearing anything this...
I now have a theory that there WERE shoulder pads, and removing them left extra fabric which the theater folks resolved by creating the gathers. Does that make sense to you?
Acquired from local theater. Photos show overall front and back, plus:
1. the seaming that wraps around and shapes the hips.
2. (yellow clips recreate) gathers I removed (forgot to get photo before I snipped). Noticed that the needlework was not up to quality of dress and thread was new. Gathers...

But what is the link between the Maisonette info already in the VFG label directory (which Lizzie says went under in 1960 or so), and the "FOR MAISONETTE" on the Kobrin label? Same company or no? The dress I...
Thanks, ladies. Always happy to have my suspicions "approved" by the pros ; )...
Deborah, if you think 'Rinky Dink' is a funny name, how about "Chubbette?" A friend/colleague, Lucy, at "Roly Poly Vintage" on Etsy, uses their label as her avatar. Can you imagine a plus-size company calling...
