Hi Villa, and such a pretty dress! I, too, think it's early to mid 70s. One of my friends got married somewhere between 1973 and 1975 (awful that I can't remember the year!), and we bridesmaids wore a halter dress with ruffled neckline and very similar lines, along with matching short jackets...
I've got tons of "work to cocktails" dresses, but, unfortunately, very few of them listed now....
I do have these currently listed, though:
Not sure if this one is dressy enough, butis dressier than a typical day or sun dress and would be office suitable with a little shrug or jacket and...
Karin, that print is fabulous! I still would say 70s on this. I have a couple of 70s' maxi dresses with very similar lines. Also, the sleeve treatment looks 70s. And if you mean that filament-type nylon thread, I again associate this mostly with the 70s.
That is cute! And I'm thinking 70s, maybe into the early 80s. I used to wear a lot of hats in the 70s, and my mom wore a lot in the 80s and 90s, and this looks, as Barbara says, no earlier than 70s, but I don't think later than 80s.
Cute shoes, and I agree with Melanie that these look 1980s, with the shape of the heel. Also the bright colors. If Melanie thinks they could go into the 90s, I'm sure she's right, but by that time I was pretty much not buying shoes like Imelda Marcos (as I used to do!).
The gloves are really...
I'm with Gayle--a gentle handwashing in Woolite (Wool Wash) or Lux flakes if they even have those anymore! You may need to apply the detergent directly to the most soiled areas and let it soak for just a wee bit.
I don't think, of ot were me, I'd try to remove the paint or whatever it is...
That's an amazing suit, and what great sleuthing has been done! From the close-up shots of the fabric, it's looking to me like a wool knit. I wasn't sure that wool was still widely used for swimsuits in the 30s, but from what Pam posted, it was. And it sure looks like it to me....
I love these wedding dresses you're showing! I used to work in a bridal shop and loved it....
Anyway, this looks to be from the mid 70s, when a Victorian-revival type of wedding gown was very popular. My cousin got married around 1976, and her gown and our bridesmaids' gowns were in the same...
I agree with Mary Jane and Carrie that this is early 70s and not 50s--70s was my first thought "at a glance." Priscilla of Boston was such an iconic wedding gown maker--it's sad they went out of business.... I've never seen this boutique label, so I'm glad I caught your post!
I can't tell from the photos, but it doesn't look translucent enough for lucite. It looks very opaque, and most of the lucite I've ever had allows some light through. Is it heavy and clunky, or lightweight? Have you tested for bakelite? Does it "thunk" or "ting" when you click it together or...
New at Vintage Baubles this week:
This very wearable Vintage 70s Mr. Dino Signature Print Jersey Maxi Dress, Size Medium
Vintage 1950s’ Faerie Surelock Pink Nylon Nightgown, Size 38
Very cute--and very 70s. I'd say probably middlin' to early-late 70s. I wore a very similarly styled dress to my parent's 25th wedding anniversary party, and that would have been 1977. Exact same shape, sleeve style, and cuffs, but different collar treatment.
In a traditional vein, it could be a Quinceañera dress, or a prom dress.
Also, I might make another bow for the bodice--in a solid color or polka-dot or striped fabric (making sure to remove the existing bow intact so it could be put back on again) and a matching sash or belt in the same...
That's a really good point, Ruth!
I think several styles of clothing can be done in psychedelic prints--so you can get a hippie dress that's psychedelic. Since the hippie movement/related drug culture was infamous for the trippy psychedelic experience, a lot of hippie clothing had psychedelic...
Sandy, if you're asking if we have an actual "definition" of psychedelic, then, no I don't think we do! I guess I'm not quite sure I understand the question.... As with just about any popular keyword these days, people use, abuse, and misuse them to death. You & I both lived during the...
New at Vintage Baubles today: Vintage 50s Anne Fogarty Silk Full Skirted Cocktail, Dinner, Party Dress, Size XS
At MyVintageCocktail:
Vintage DeLiso Slingback Spectator Pumps Heels, Size 10
I agree that Russel Taylor pieces are faux fur, but yours is definitely a very nice quality one! I have one that's not as plush and realistic looking as yours--which does look really soft. I'm guessing that this "Signature Collection" label may have been on a better line than their standard...
Such a great little cocktail dress! And I'm with the Lurex crowd--this appears to be a fabric with Lurex shot through it, rather than an allover lame'. Lurex isn't usually referred to as a yard good, as is lame', but a yarn or thread used in woven or knitted fabrics for a metallic effect. (Lurex...
Because it's always fall or winter somewhere, here are some cool-weather offerings at MyVintageCocktail:
Vintage 1940s 40s Ladies Dove Grey Soft Wool Skirt Suit, Sm Med 6 8
Vintage 60s Grey Faux Fur Swing Coat, Silver Mink Collar, Size Med Lg
I'd try some of the Dryel cleaning solution that comes in the kits--but not using the plastic applicator tip on the bottle.... Or, if this is blood, try a mild solution of drugstore-grade peroxide mixed with a bit of Woolite and warm water. With either solution, I'd take a white cloth, squirt...
Very cool jacket! I think it's late 60s, but it could be as late as the early 70s. The style of the buttons is very 60s looking to me, but I would need to see them in person to be sure.... And I agree that it's a Norfolk-inspired style.
Also agree with jauntyrooster and Carrie. I wouldn't...
I agree with 60s--the fabric, wide lapels on the collar, and general cut of the coat say "60s" to me, too. I think the latter part of the 60s--around 1968 would be my guess, give or take a year or two.
I really don't think of this as a maxi coat--rather, as Melanie put it, a "long evening...
I'm in total agreement with Louise! I worked in a Singer store 1974 thru 1975, and saw a lot of fabric like what your dress is made of. Also made most of my own clothing during the 70s, and I'd say your dress dates from '74 to no later than '75 or '76. Is there a maker's tag in it? Some...
Eli, this is really a piece with pizazz! Love the colorway! But I don't think it's a dress, I think it's a dressing gown. I was stymied till I saw it on your dress form and saw the fabric close up. The fabric, cuffed sleeves, button front, tie bow, etc., lead me to think it's a dressing...
I have almost the same coat, but with a rabbit-fur collar! I would go with late 50s to early 60s on this, and I do think the fabric is a silk ottoman or similar.
Hi Eli, love the color of that dress! Hopefully I can help answer some of your questions....
1) I call those belts, which were omnipresent, it seems, in the mod era, half belts; not sure if that's technically what they're called, but it's what I've always called 'em!
2) Scooter dresses are...
