That's a beautiful dress! I have one question: does it look like it may have originally had sleeves? Can you tell? To me, it looks like a European peasant dress, but I would have expected short puffed sleeves or long billowing sleeves, perhaps with smocking above a ruffle at the ends.

That actually looks like a chemisette (for wearing under a suit jacket) to me. Probably 1940s.
