    What the Vice-President's lady wore....

I think it's wonderful when the wives look great and, quite honestly, I think it's worth whatever it cost. They are the most visible women in America and ready-to-wear is still an important Am. industry. Every time they are photographed they advertise Am. fashions. I don't always like their...

    Michelle's ball gown

Michelle\'s ball gown Designed by Jason Wu, it's yellow and appears to have tulle "puffs" on it. He designed another dress for her earlier that had embroidered black "puffs."

    Michelle Obama's outfit

Somehow I don't think netting added much warmth. I assume she was wearing nice warm snuggies a la Princess Diana (one of the things I learned from David Sassoon.)

    OT-Bob Hope Classic Ball

One of the most unusual tops was white lace and white mink. I only saw it from the back. The center had horizontal strips of mink interlace into the fabric. The side back was lace. Sorry I didn't have my camera along. It never occurred to me to use my phone. C

    Michelle Obama's outfit

The outfit is stunning and she looks great in it, but I think it's more afternoon than morning attire. But it's certainly not dull! C

    OT-Bob Hope Classic Ball

Quick bits and pieces-- The best vintage was a short A-line leopard coat trimmed with leather. It was stunning. The wearer was at least 75 and looked great! There were several 70s prints. I wanted to wear my Hanae Mori Op Art with the 1/2" rhinestone on the left boob. Charlie wasn't excited...

    OT-Bob Hope Classic Ball

After much thought, I've decided to post this because many people have asked me questions through the years. I'm trying to finish an edit job and will have to post in bits and pieces. This is the 50th year of the Bob Hope Classic. It's one of the premier golf tournaments and raises lots of...

    Valentino: The Last Emperor

The director spoke after the film. Apparently there were some difficulties when filming. I did not meet him when I went to Valentino. I did meet his sister and his partner. The first time I went I visited the workrooms and the archives. Last time, only the archives. C

    Valentino: The Last Emperor

We're in the midst of the Palm Springs International Film Festival and since I teach in Jan. and rarely go to the movies, I've never been; but today's paper listed a Valentino documentary at 4pm. It is absolutely fabulous and will be released in about three months. In the meantime, it's...

Could you tell me what these pleat-like things are called?

This afternoon one of my tailoring students who is a professional patternmaker stopped by. I showed her the 3 designs. She called #2 a flange; I told her I wouldn't call it a flange--only #3. Just goes to show there are lots of terms floating around. I really enjoy VFG--the things I've...

Could you tell me what these pleat-like things are called?

    1. tucks. you could say "facing each other" 2. welt seam; it's a lapped seam top stitched to look like a tuck, probably faced since it is shaped. 3. If there is a pleat from the shoulder it is a flange. If not, it's a decorative tuck to look like a flange. C

    Vintage Alterations

I think you may need two people--one for mundane items and another for more technical work. You might consider contacting one of the schools in LA. There are several colleges--Woodbury, LA Trade Tech, FIDM, and several community colleges --in the area. I know someone in Palm Springs if you...

This is a teaser, but I'll return later today with more info. I just saw a preview of the CD showing the Chanels--couture and ready-to-wear--and copies in my collection. I am really excited; there are 16 couture suits with lots of details. To see a preview, you'll need Adobe Reader 9...

    OT-black eyed peas

I should have posted this yesterday so you could purchase your black-eyed peas. When I was growing up in so. GA, we always had black-eyed peas and hog jowl--a lean meat from the hog's jaw--for new year's dinner to bring good luck. And, if you aren't familiar with the south, dinner is the...

Announcing the Couture Allure Steal of a Deal Sale

I took a brief tour and noted several items I would like to own. Good luck with this venture. I really enjoyed the Valentino/Desses pix. I've got to learn how to manage Photobucket so I can post some pix. I have some workroom photos from Valentino that are very much Desses inspired...

    Even Chanel is not imune~

One thing I learned while visiting couture houses is that a mid-east wedding can keep a house in business for a year. Since the price of oil is down, the weddings may be less lavish and the overall spending reduced. This would affecto all of the couture houses. C

    Even Chanel is not imune~

WOW! That said, remember that Chanel bought Lesage, the passementerie and millinery workshops, and the jasmine fields that grow the fragrances for their perfumes. The business news keeps talking about the drop in the luxury market. People who have money are less likely to spend it on suits...

    OT-cat in heaven

My husband brought this home so I'm sending it as a Christmas gift to all my friends who love cats. When the barn cat went to heaven, he was greeted by St. Peter who asked what the cat would like since he had been a good cat. The cat replied that he had always slept on a cold floor and...

    Are you using diapers?

I started to work on my stains again this morning. The ink spot is lighter but I don't think it will come out completely. I've used a variety of home remedies--hair spray, alcohol, nail polish remover, and hydrogen peroxide as well as Carbona and Afta. When I started to work on the cotton...

    Lace Museum in Berkeley
