Is there a name for this type of embroidery?

I would describe the fabric is fine or high quality batiste made in Switzerland. If the buyer know anything about fabrics, she (he) will know what you're talking about. One of the things that makes this fabric special is that it is woven with very fine threads and lots of threads/in. There...

Is there a name for this type of embroidery?

Here are some thoughts--machine made. I don't know enough about embroidery machines to describe how the motifs were repeated but it was probably some sort of program or a cam; and the front was put into the machine, and completely embroidered--before it was cut. If the entire front is...

Emmapeelpants, Thanks for your help with the Janice Wainwright sizing. Since I knew it would be small, I bid low and didn't get it. I did get the 2 Chanel suits, the Ricci suit, and Hardy Amies dress so I can't complain. Claire

Do you buy vintage sewing patterns online?

Size is important. I'm only interested in designer so would like them grouped. The same might be considered for the newspaper patterns. Many of them are very fashion forward. There was discussion several months ago about scanning the whole back because some homesewers will use the pattern...

Vintage French Black Lace Blouse Help Needed

Look at the seams, lace insertions, and tucks carefully with a magnifying glass. If they are handmade, it is probably a couture blouse. Most blouses don't have labels. Don't look at the shoulder seams. Even in couture they are probably machine stitched. Claire

    Vionnet workshop

Lizzie's wonderful Mad Carpentier label prompted me to post this info about a Vionnet workshop which a colleague is teaching in Palm Springs in early January. It's a five day workshop and includes draping and sewing techniques. If you would like additional information, it's probably better...

YSL full circle skirt, or is it?

It's a European fastener like I've seen on YSL. I've also seen the similar YSL stripes. It's really a neat skirt. What is the waist? Claire

    Ralph Rucci

Remember several months ago when I visited the Ralph Rucci workroom in NY. The article about the workrooms is in the latest Threads. It's really quite nice with some drop-dead photos from Phoenix Art Museum. There's a great photo of Ralph and his dog. Claire

    couture and chanel cds

Since I'm "self-publishing" them, I'll have to market them. This is not my strong suit, but I'm committed to the project. Peggy Jane, I know several people in the UK that I'll contact about marketing them there. I'll keep you posted. Claire

    lingerie fabric

I agree with Julie. I think it's a burn-out. The sections that are sheer were woven like the rest of the fabric with a different fiber type--maybe rayon. Then it was printed with a chemical to dissolve the rayon in those areas. That's why it is sheer. Maggie, I have a sample of this if you...

    Inter-library loan

Recently a book was mentioned on a trade board which unfortunately was published in the UK and so this may not apply. That said, the Library of Congress has a copy of every book published in the U.S. In order to get a copyright, you agree to provide 2 copies of the book to the LOC. The...

    Dress date is puzzling me??

It's hard to see the inside of the bodice, but what I see looks like a hemmed edge at the neck and armholes. If so, this was not made at home. The topstitching at these edges is very precise, especially if this is a finished hem. If you photo the bodice wrong side out, I might be able to help...

Funny things you say as a Mom

When my younger son was about 5, he said something like "Richard [the dog] shedded in my shoe." He said it very quickly and slid over the shedding so that it sounded like a toilet word. Same son about a year later informed me that there was a road under the one we were travelling on. I tried...
