I found (mostly classified) ads for Sylvia Rutkins between 1952 and 1963. As you can se here, this 1963 ad asserts that Sylvia Rutkins sold "Better ladies' dresses, coats & suits."
A 1961 article notes that a designer's sweaters "are available in New York at Sylvia Rutkins, 520 Madison Avenue...
Wow...another lovely find.
I found a number of ads for Isabelle Allard (one from 1988 and the rest from 1990s through the 2000s) and the prices seemed to range from $1000 (USD) to over $4000, so I think you are correct that they were not cheap when they were new.
I hope you don't mind that I e-mailed the photos of this lovely brooch to my antique-jewelry expert friend Janet Zapata as I was curious about the thing on the back pin. I asked if she knew what it was and she replied:
"Nice brooch with transparent enamel over the engraved design. It dates to...
Thank you for the additional information. You may be on target with the accessories--and more--as I kept digging and found a 1987 article that said:
"Renoma of Paris sculpted womanly shaped dresses and suits, with knee-baring skirts, strong shoulders and fitted waists."
I had only searched...
A couple of additional observations about Renoma...
Every single reference I saw to his store and fashions seemed to indicate that it was a place for men's fashions. I read references to the fact that young men were flocking there for their fashions and a 1967 article about French stores said...
Thank you very much for that great link. I assume from the way the PDF is constructed (four identical blocks of text; "Use this list to send messages...") that it is intended to be used with children, so I am going to give one to each of the children. Even though they may be non-reading...
All this week I am visiting one of our local elementary schools to talk about small aspects of Victorian life. The art teacher is doing related projects with each grade and on Wednesday I am supposed to talk to the kindergartners about the history of fans. I have a small assortment of...
Oh to have a body that could wear something like that sweater/ski thing...
And I think I gasped when I saw the babies-in-cellophane and laughed out loud at the reflecting shoe. Maybe it was an urban legend that flew around Catholic schools, but I heard ominous warnings not to wear black patent...
\"Just Married\" vintage
Not a vintage wearable, but a sweet vintage kitchen potholder that was likely someone's homemade wedding gift. Isn't it sweet?
After Jonathan shared his excellent idea for acid-free photo storage boxes from Michael's craft store, I went there this afternoon to get some--and was delighted to find them on sale for only about $2.69 each. As I photographed shoes prior to storing them in the box (so I can put the photo on...
I agree that the label on your lovely dress looks older, but this excerpt from a 1984 article seems to underscore the 1980s attribution:
"Princess Katalin zu Windisch-Graetz has become a major shareholder in Jerry Silverman, Inc., and was named president and chief executive officer, in a move...
Here are additional instructions for making the belt loops. I would like to just note that you don't pull the needle through each time (until the last loop); you are just pulling the thread through, to create another loop, then pulling it to tighten the former loop.
And those two different...
In a reference to a DELAWARE church, I found:
"By reason of his wife's health he resigned in 1905,
and was succeeded by Rev. A. E. Clay.
It would explain the connection between a Wilmington hat store and Rev. Clay.
In a 1941 article about a Revolutionary War-time Wilmington tavern building:
OLDEST HAT STORE--Down about 50 feet and in the same building is the oldest hat store in America, that is the oldest hat store still in business. Its proprietor is 80-year old Albert DuBell, who took over the business...
I found a second (1974) California reference to Tamara's:
"The fashions were from Tamaras in Northridge"
and from a 2004 California obit:
"Borek, Anna Rose Passed away April 14, 2004. She was born June 3, 1929 in San Pedro, and was a lifetime resident. Mrs. Borek was employed by Tamara's...
I just found a 1970 Ontario, California newspaper article about a burglary at Tamara's Dress Shop, so I think you are correct about it being a store label. So, is Ontario Calif in southern California?
Leisa,
I am so sorry you lost Mz. Bunny and I hope you are comforted by the fact that she had a wonderful life with you and you were able to make the end as comfortable as possible, too.
Sorry for the dribbles and drabs...
A 1952 ad for a fashion show noted that the dresses were "Designed by Lois Zagri of the Couture House of Zagri, Inc."
A 1947 NY Times article about fall fashion collections noted that:
"Zagri also shows a becoming suit of 1920 whose slim black skirt is topped by a novelty black and white backdipping jacket. A wide tuxedo collar is open near the bottom pocket-wise for holding the jacket snug about the hips."...
